Wow...Sniffa is woefully uneducated in all things Duran Duran!!!
He's *only* ever heard "Hungry Like the Wolf"

He's never heard "Rio", "Notorious", or "Wild Boys"

In fact, he hates it, upon hearing it...

:wtf:

Annulment in the works?

Seriously, he's only a year and 3 months older than me. Admittedly, he got Mtv much later than I, but...

I'm concerned.

And please don't bring your Duran Duran hate into this thread...

:P

37. I saw Duran Duran in 1997
after having seen many, many, many other live shows through the 80's and 90's. I was very impressed with their musicianship and stage show. It was one of the better concerts I've seen. Imitation is not only the best form of flattery, it does not preclude them having talent. I'm personally never got into The Art of Parties - and you can't convince me they didn't both steal shamelessly from Bowie. Duran Duran had a much more accessible, upbeat, and dance-able sound than Japan - they were clearly influenced by Japan but created their own sound (if not their own look). Fine, they were more mainstream, more pop ... but so was Paul McCartney more pop than John Lennon - does that mean McCartney doesn't have talent?

63. pompous
1 : excessively elevated or ornate <pompous rhetoric>
2 : having or exhibiting self-importance : arrogant <a pompous politician>
3 : relating to or suggestive of pomp : magnificent

Well, I'm not sure you can call Duran Duran excessively elevated and they weren't particularly ornate with their primarily black and white outfits.
I wouldn't call them any more arrogant than any other musician and when I saw them in concert, arrogant certainly is not the word I'd use to describe them (I've seen FAR more arrogant bands).
There wasn't a lot of pomp (ostentatious display) in their stage show when I saw it. Of course, the 80's typified pomp and Japan wasn't immune.

... So, you must mean magnificent, in which case I'd agree :P

46. oh, come on
Sure, Duran Duran were really influenced by Japan and have always admitted it. Both bands had their strong suits. One isn't inherently better than the other. Robert Smith also admitted that he was trying to make a song that sounded like Japan when he wrote "The Walk", but it doesn't mean the cure are or were copycats or unoriginal.
