Poll question: Would it offend you if Randi Rhodes called Lynne Cheney "a trucking door" |
|
I've made the mistake of delving into an argument in GD about Ms. Rhodes. It got me thinking.

1. I've never heard that phrase. What is sexist about that "a trucking door"? |

I'm out here near 168th & Center.
My wife and I have kids, and (in order to discuss this) we had to come up with something that would convey what Randi said, without actually saying it. That was the best we could do on short notice.

3. I'd be offended on behalf of |

trucking doors.
What'd they ever do to deserve being compared to Lynne Cheney?!

I'm thicker-skinned than that. I believe in an absolute right to express opinions, whatever they may be. Ms. Rhodes opinion on HC (or Lynne Cheney) is as valid as mine that Randi Rhodes is a hack and progressives are better off with her off-the-air.* I believe in free speech minimally-confined by jurisprudence and acceptance of the consequences of expressing such opinions.
Limiting speech and expression because you don't like the content is a slippery slope leading to a fascism of ideas. This is frankly a bedrock Democratic ideal, a foundation of our civil liberties. Those who disagree are no better than Presi-dunce Shrub and his Republican cronies.*
*- You see, they're opinions and not statements of fact. If you don't like someone's opinion, you're free to form and express your own opposing opinion. That's the brilliance of the first amendment. Not only do you have a right to say whatever you'd like (minimally-limited), you have a right to make an ass of yourself. Ms. Rhodes certainly did that.
