It's not normal for me...but tonight, I am down...
Funny how small things can add up, and then seem not so small...

You all have been so kind to me, and I really appreciate it...

I've been told by my poetry teacher that my growth is off the charts...

But...

I look at the poetry magazines, and all the work is so damned polished, and perfect, and beautiful...

Mine just clunks along, and right now I feel as though I will never write anything that lovely...

I'm in such a hurry...

How many more years do I have, anyway?

I wish I didn't feel this way, but dammit, I do...

I just needed to get this out...

1. You write beautifully...
And your work is beautiful.

And it is from your heart.

It is just as good, if not better than what is in poetry magazines.

I mean this Peg....keep writing, you are good.

Aw...

Actually, my poetry that's written when I'm like this is awfully dark.

I don't think it would be good to share it...

It's a side of me that you really haven't seen, and I'm not ready to have you see it, either...

But thank you...

It means more than I can adequately express...

9. You still expect it to happen on deadline.
It never does.

The way to work is to write it then put it away for a while- a day, a week, a month, even a year. Then go back to it and rewrite it with a fresh mind and a different approach.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. The right words to express those ideas are priceless, and cannot be discovered in a moment.

Trust me. I've been doing it this way for years.

12. Part of the process
Don't worry about it. Down time is part of the creative process. I know this from experience, and from all the good teachers I've had in the writing business. (I'm a published novelist/essayist.)

You might feel like you're not going anywhere, but the Muse is in there, working her pretty little butt off, and, without your knowledge or consent, the words will come, and they will be the best you've ever written.

In the meantime, I give you advice that I got a long time ago from my friend - the brilliant writer who is no longer with us, alas - Walker Percy:

He told me that when you can't write, read.

When you can't read, walk.

When you can't walk, go to the movies.

And, when you can't go to the movies, eat something wonderful.

So, relax. Life is for laughing.

14. You're braver than I am.
I haven't posted any of my writing online in years.

I very rarely offer comments or critiques of other people's writing. Not even yours. I would rather quietly enjoy stuff than risk making a comment that might not be taken well. I'm very cautious that way, and I'm just as cautious about my own writing. Which is why I haven't posted it.

15. My dear CaliforniaPeggy...
My opinion of poetry has always been along the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is some poetry out there that is regarded as beautiful and wonderfully flowing, and I just can't wrap my mind around it or find its beauty no matter how hard I try. On the other hand, there is some poetry that seems clunky when you read it in your mind - Chaucer comes to mind immediately - but if you take a moment, the beauty of it springs forth and an incredibly rich world makes itself evident.

I have never found your poetry clunky. It seems like it's straight from your heart - and that's where poetry SHOULD come from.

Your writing is great, and you have immense talent. Never forget that.

28. Peggy, you remind me of my daughter, no kidding. Her grade is having a Renaissance
fair at school so all of her classes are geared toward that right now and in english she had to write a sonnet about her character which is an Apopthocarist. Ok so she's trying to write it and she tells me how bad it is and how she just cannot write poetry and i tell her to go a little easier on her own self, so anyhow tonight was open house night at school and her english reacher video taped each child reading their sonnet and hers was really good and it was hilarious. "Anastasia that was really well done!" "Mom, it could have been better".

feel the presense of other poets.

even write with them somewhere in side of you.

they are parents of a sort.

but you must be pragmatic and keep nose to the grindstone -- keep pounding the poetry out.

you may already have this guy in your computer pages -- and either love him or hate him.

but he has interesting psychological things to say about the influece of poets on other poets and th anxiety in can cause.

he spends a lot of time defending the old cannon -- but that's ok -- there' plenty there to use.

you're doing well -- just keep churning it out

36. In creativity, there are always those who are better, and those who are worse than you.
Edited on Fri Apr-18-08 12:15 AM by Radio_Lady
I've written my share of essays, scripts, poems, and even some good tracts on this website. But if I compare myself to a couple of really good writers -- in literature or even on this site (William Rivers Pitt and Nancy Greggs come to mind), my scratchings don't really make it in their company.

Nevertheless, I continue to try and communicate the best I can -- just the way I try to sing. It's OK, I know I have perfect pitch (inborn, I understand), a pretty nice alto voice (someone told me once that I sounded like Margaret Whiting). But my singing voice is not as good as many others. However, when I'm in a group, I find it lots of fun. On Sundays, I try to sing the alto part of the hymns at the Unitarian fellowship. I am surrounded by other altos and I sometimes imagine THEIR voices coming out of MY mouth. I never thought about it, but could that be called musical plagiarism?

Peggy, do what you dream -- even though no one else may admire it -- if it fulfills you, so be it.

Hey, kiddo? Whaddja expect, to earn your living writing poerty? Not very likely for most of us peons.

I've urged him to not put his hopes too high.

About as high as mine are of becoming a comedienne or a singer.

You know what really got me feeling just a tad jealous yesterday? THEY SAY that Randi Rhodes signed a contract for $400,000. And Larry King is earning millions.

I'm thinking about going to one of the local comedy clubs here and doing stand-up.

People think I'm funny, but looks aren't everything! (JOKE)

Can I start a new career this late?

We are in Cat Harbor on the south side of Catalina. It has been beautiful out here for the past few days. We are anchored, which means we swing around all the time. Every time I look outside, I have a different view. We have a half moon and tons of stars tonight. I've seen the eagles out fishing twice this week - always a treat.

I sure hope you feel better tomorrow. Here's another hug for you. If you get over to the island, let me know. It's very healing out here.

I think your writing is and continues to be beautiful. No reason it can't get better and better. No piece of writing is perfect in the first draft. You should find some bad first drafts of famous (like, Nobel Laureate-level famous) poems if you want to feel better about your own progress. (The first scribblings of the material that was later shaped into The Wasteland, for instance, are supposedly godawful.) Seriously, comparing your work to published poems isn't a good idea. I would just focus on finding your voice instead.

I recommend The Poet's Companion, by Kim Addonizio and Dorianne Laux, if you haven't already read it. I've had that since college and it's by far the best book on the craft of writing poetry that I've ever encountered. It's like my Bible, and is excellent for these kinds of frustrating moments.

I'm right there with you, by the way. Self-doubt isn't something that goes away even after one feels she "knows how" to write poetry (or after one has been published or complimented by critics). It's just something we all have to struggle with.

63. Just a kind word or two to someone who always has a kind word for others...
Your politeness and civility to each person you respond to here has been something I've taken note of since I discovered the lounge. You most likely have lots of years left; I don't know your age, but I'm guessing you have lots of time left to perfect your writing or whatever else you're working to improve. I'm a lyricist, and sometimes think I'm not half bad till I look at people like Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen or Dylan or a thousand others and realize how rudimentary I still am. I sometimes think I've become a pretty decent R&B sax player, then I listen to King Curtis, or Junior Walker...Or a decent harmonica player and then hear Little Walter or Paul Butterfield...... gettin' my drift? Always gonna be somebody better and all you need to do is write from the heart and keep working to improve your skills, and whatever level of quality ( in whose eyes, BTW?) you do or don't get to should hopefully be secondary to how much joy you get out expressing yourself to the best of your apparently increasing abilities. ( and of course, now I'm going to go beat myself up for not having said this more eloquently)

Your eloquence shines through in every phrase...

I get your drift, loud and clear!

I am 64...

And it's not so much that I think I have too few years yet left to hone my skills...

My parents are still alive, and living independently, at 88 and 90 years old...

I just wish I could progress more quickly than I am!

But I don't have the discipline to work 20 hours a day, and I want to be free to do other things too!

Thank you so much for your support...It means a lot!

66. Dear Peggy, Do you remember my
telling you about that poem "Last Romance" and you were so kind with your praise. Well I didn't even get an honorable mention and when I looked at the winners I felt very inadequate. I lacked content just to name one. My son thought it was great but when I sent him the some of the winners, he had to agree mine was more song lyric. Anyway, I think your poems are beautiful and I always look forward to reading them....Keep movin' on movin' on, your day will come. Have a good weekend and get inspired again.

79. I think you need to dedicate some time to "mirror work"
When you drive down the freeway, do you measure your progress by how far along you've traveled or by how many drivers you pass up along the way? Poetry is not a competition, either. I suggest you go to an open mic poetry reading. You get up, you read your stuff, and people clap. It's perfect; you get applause just for being you and being true. The CalPeg I know deserves to be appreciated.

Speak your soul, clunky as you may see it's expression, and never try and over-polish what already shines.

Write and write again as it suits you, share what you will and keep for yourself what you wish there as well.

And, as now, fret when you feel the need.

87. Dear Peggy...
Personally, I've always preferred honest, real, rough-around-the-edges poetry to polished perfection - yes, the stuff written and published by professionals is beautiful to read, but for me it almost seems like there's something lacking. And I may not have commented on every poem you've posted here, but I have read many of them, and they are beautiful! You have a real gift for drawing the reader in, putting them in the moment and making them feel the moods, scenes, and emotions you write about in your poetry. And that, to me, is what makes it worth reading. Besides, who wants to be perfect anyway? ;) I've always thought that perfection is likely rather boring. :P

I kind of understand how you feel about the time thing - sometimes it feels like my life is rushing past, and I feel like I've accomplished so little! And in a way, I know that's true...but it's also true that if I were to die tomorrow, I would have still done a lot of things in my life. :) Of course I haven't accomplished everything I hope to accomplish in my life - but does anyone ever do that, really? Some people live and die with no regrets, but I imagine that even those individuals could find other things that they would want to do - even if they were satisfied with what they had accomplished.

Sorry for getting a bit philosophical there, lol...I tend to get carried away sometimes. :P But yeah, long story short:

1) Your poetry rocks!
2) You rock!

 :yourock: :pals:

Peace.
