Guys! How the heck do I get at 71k image down to a 11k image to use as an avatar?! Yeesh! All I have is Photo-deluxe and so far no luck.

2. Good question, but I think you have to get it down to around 1K.
Unless I'm mistaken. But I'm glad you asked. I have an image that's about 5K IIRC and I'd like to use it as my avatar. But it's just too darn big.

Any suggestions from the assembled geniuses?

3. if you have windows, use paint
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 09:49 PM by dweller
open in paint, and under 'image' click stretch, skew.
horizontal, vertical settings
default is 100%, try 25% and check the properties of the file onced saved. (you might want to save tests by a different name so as not to screw up the original until you hit on the right % to get it to the size you want)..

sorry, don't have photo deluxe or would talk about that.

good luck, if you want to send it to me, check your pm
i can do it with MGI photo.

5. First resize it down to 48 x 48 pixels
Your software may offer you a choice of resizing algorithms. Use whichever one gives the best result. If your picture looks a little fuzzy after you've done that, there should be some sort of "Sharpen" command to crisp it up again.

There are also freeware programs like Easy Thumbnails (http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs) which are designed to produce the best possible reduced versions of pictures, and you might try downloading something like that.

If the result seems so small you can't even tell what it is, or if the lines are all broken and jagged, you might try cropping out just a piece of your original and using that.

Once you get the 48 x 48 pixel version, you may find that it's still several K in size. If Photo-deluxe has an "Export as" option, you can try playing around with that and seeing if you can get an acceptable result at under 1 K. In general, "Export as gif" is best for line drawings and cartoons and "Export as jpg" is best for photos.

If you don't have an "Export as," you can just try reducing the color depth. (I had to reduce mine to 16 colors to get the file small enough.) Then save it as a gif or jpg.

6. I've been pushing IrfanView all day
Great image viewing/editing program.

Best of all, it's freeware.

What I did was to take an image, crop the part I want to avatar, paste it on a new page selection, optimize the image (color, contrast, brightness) to make sure it is actually visible.

Next, I reduce to 48x48 (yes, you can do this with ease!), then if satisfied, I may 'sharpen' the pic to make it more vivid. Then I save as either a gif or jpeg (I saved my first batch as gif's, but jpeg has slightly better resolution). Then upload.

Most of my images are between 1-3kb. I can reduce the resolution to bring down the file size.

Starting with a 71k image is good. At least you have good resolution.
