One of the saddest songs ever

And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)
And when I told her
Her kisses were not like before
She cried (she cried)
I thought that our romance was over and done
But to her it had just begun

And when I told her
Another girl had caught my eye
She cried (she cried)
And when I kissed her
A kiss that only meant goodbye
She cried (she cried)

(sha-la-la-la sha-la-la)

And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)

story of my life

4. Or

Lullaby in Blue

I know that I'm no saint.
My head is in the clouds.
They called you a mistake,
but I still, I still say your name out loud.

They called me a stupid girl,
just like my mom.
Too many men passed through my arms.
At seventeen I looked into your eyes,
knew I could never comfort your cries.
Every April still reminds me of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.

It all goes by so fast.
How lovely you must be.
Why you've reached the age at last
that I was when your daddy lived with me.

How I wish we could meet somewhere,
talk it through.
There is so much I would say to you.
There are others, I'm not alone.
A younger brother you've never known,
and a baby girl who so reminds me of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.

As the years go by,
try not to think of us sadly.
Believe it if you can,
I wanna see you so badly.
On your birthday, Mama's thinking of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.
My lullaby in blue.
My lullaby . . .

5. This is not THE saddest, but it's tough to listen too, and watch the vid, and keep a dry eye.

Please tell me the reason
behind the colors that you fly
love just one nation
and the whole world we divide
you say you’re “sorry”
say, “there is no other choice”
but god bless the people
who cannot raise their voice

(chorus)
we can chase down all our enemies
bring them to their knees
we can bomb the world to pieces
but we can’t bomb it into peace
we may even find a solution
to hunger and disease
we can bomb the world to pieces
but we can’t bomb it into peace

violence brings one thing
more more of the same
military madness
the smell of flesh and burning pain
so I sing out to the masses
stand up if you’re still sane!
To all of us gone crazy
I sing this one refrain

(chorus)

and I sing power to the peaceful
love to the people y’all
power to the peaceful
love to the people y’all

7. Alone Again (Naturally)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZCWyx0lss4

In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

9. "And She Goes On" by Crowded House
Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden, singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountain ring
To the sounds of her laughter
And she goes on and on...

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Til we see her once again
In a world without end

It's kind of a hopeful song, but it always makes me sad. It's one of the songs that I call an "Emmy Anthem" because it makes me think of my oldest daughter, who died about 10 years ago in a car accident.

18. Foreigner - "I wanna know what love is"
Long story but RD version: found love, love died in car wreck, thought I'd never find that feeling again. Song was hot around time of funeral and hit a chord. Although I've found a new and very true love in the years since, song holds haunting quality for me to this day.

20. This guy is always a reliable source for sad songs, despite his small catalogue:
Nick Drake - "Fly"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ShXHW_FrlM

Please give me a second grace
Please give me a second face
Ive fallen far down
The first time around
Now I just sit on the ground in your way

Now if its time to recompense for whats done
Come, come sit down on the fence in the sun
And the clouds will roll by
And well never deny
Its really too hard for to fly.

Please tell me your second name
Please play me your second game
Ive fallen so far
For the people you are
I just need your star for a day.

So come, come ride in my my street-car by the bay
For now I must know how fine you are in your way
And the sea sure as I
But she wont need to cry
For its really too hard for to fly.

24. Here's one from Nick Drake that really gets to me....

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
Someday our ocean
Will find its shore.

So I`ll leave the ways that are making me be
What I really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making me love
What I really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You came with the dawn
A soul with no footprint
A rose with no thorn.

Your tears they tell me
There's really no way
Of ending your troubles
With things you can say.

And time will tell you
To stay by my side
To keep on trying
'til there's no more to hide.

So leave the ways that are making you be
What you really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making you love
What you really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
For some day our ocean
Will find its shore.

23. Mine:
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflecting Vincent's eyes of China blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hands

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
A silver thorn on a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

25. This one always tears me up
"Late at Night" Buffalo Tom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zGj0vrPxFc&feature=related

i close my door at night
but they get in all right
and she turns on the light

i held her hands so tight
'cause words don't come out right
and she sees things at night

me, i'm closer to the door
i don't get scared no more
but i don't know the score

if i could hold them in my hand
i'd make them understand
i'm not a haunted mind
i'm not a thoughtless kind

if i could put them in a jar
i know they wouldn't scar
i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would

i close my door at night
but she gets in all right
so i turn on the light

i held her hand too tight
too hard to make it right
so i could sleep at night

if i could hold them in my hand
i'd make them understand
i'm not a haunted mind
i'm not a thoughtless kind

if i could put them in a jar
i know they wouldn't scar
i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would

i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would
i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would
i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would
i'd do it if i could
i hope you know i would

26.  D minor the saddest of all keys
Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of...
Marty DiBergi: What do you call this?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".
