Whats the Best Way To Prepare Oysters?
A neighbor of mine gave me some extra oysters he picked up at the fish market and was curios if anyone here has any ideas on what the best way to prepare them. My girlfriend and I both LOVE oysters but have never cooked them before. Its raing so, grilling is out of the question. Any ideas? Thanks!

1. Preparing oysters
The trick is to get them to look in another direction while you sneak a knife under their shell.

7. Grilling them is one of the better ways, but you could try to broil them
Open and discard top shell. Put a cake cooling rack on a rimmed cookie sheet and line up the opened oysters on the rack (this helps keep them upright and more of the juices will stay in the shell.)Melt butter and mix with some crushed garlic and/or minced parsley. Heat the broiler. Top each oyster with a little bit of the butter mix and broil until they look cooked -- check every minute or so. Little ones will be done in about two minutes, larger ones in about 3-4.

10. Hey Thanks!
We have about 18 good size ones so we may try them raw and broiled. Thanks again!

12. how fresh are they?
Be careful about freshness. You'd better cook them.

Do you know how to open them? If not, find out before you mess around with a knife and the sharp shell.

One easy way to cook them is just to dredge the shucked oyster in cornmeal and flour, seasoned up with whatever you like -- perhaps Old Bay seasoning, or celery salt, or .... Then just saute in a buttered skillet until the things are done. Or deep fry in oil.

You could broil on the half shell and make a mignonette sauce to go with. That would be classic.

16. Damn
You were not kidding about opening them. What's the trick? They were really good though. We tried a little melted butter w/garlic and parsley and they were perfect. Of course, I am now going to be out there collecting recipes and various ways to prepare them. Thanks again for the tips!

17. you ought to have an oyster knife
Edited on Fri May-02-08 06:03 PM by grasswire
Hold the oyster down on the table with a folded dish towel or pot holder or glove. You slide the knife in at the backside of the oyster, the opposite from where it opens. That is the hinge muscle. Slide in a good strong short-bladed knife, and twist it sharply. That opens the oyster without sending you to the emergency room.

18. I'd talk to them and tell them that they shouldn't see being shelled and eaten as failure.
Hopefully, they'll be prepared for what's coming at that point. Check on Amazon -- maybe there's a video you can show them.
