I just bought some pheromone thingy at PetCo for Chessie the wunderdog |
|
Because if she keeps me one more night with her fear of storms, I may just off myself.
Hope it works. I'd rather not have to give her doggie xanax, but dammit, I will if she doesn't cut it out. Or maybe I'll take the doggie xanax myself and sleep verrrryyyyy well.

She gets so stressed out panting like there is no tomorrow, wanting to run around from bedroom to bedroom. Even holding her in the downstairs bathroom where there aren't any windows doesn't help. Putting on the sound machine doesn't help.
The vet recommended this, so I plugged it in and we'll see how it goes. I got some natural type calm down pills for her as well.
My biggest worry is that she'll stroke out or have a heart attack. And, the weirdest thing, she LEARNED this behavior from when my son was little and terrified of storms. He would go into the bathroom, turn on the fan and hide until it was over. She started going in there with him and now she's totally terrified of storms.
Funny, though. The puppy isn't bothered by them at all. Will even sit with her head out the doggie door during them. Go figure.

If it doesn't work, you can try Rescue Remedy. Also, you can ask your vet to get you some Tramadol.

What is rescue remedy? I know about the tramadol, but wanted to try something like this first. It was the first thing the vet recommended, so we'll see.
Plus, it wasn't cheap. It's like one of those plug in air fresheners, but it was $50. :wow:

6. Damn. I wish I had asked you before I went to Petco. |

I got her these natural calming tablets as well and it is supposed to storm tonight. The store said I could bring them back if they didn't work, but honestly, I just want her to calm down. I'm afraid she's gonna have a heart attack she gets so upset.

9. Well, if that's what your vet recommended |
|
then better to follow their advice first, at least. I mean, I know dogs in general fairly well, but your vet knows YOUR dog very well. Now, you have something to fall back on if that doesn't work.

11. I don't know. The vet is wonderful, but I think they were trying to |
|
give me a handy alternative rather than an Rx. To get the Rx, I would have to bring her in and they couldn't see her until next week.
Have you ever heard of people giving dogs Benadryl to get them through storms? Someone mentioned it to me at Bunco last week, but I've never heard about that and I'm a little leery.

12. Yes, and I don't like the idea. |
|
It's for allergies, not for anxiety. I don't care for giving animals the full-bore Benedryl stuff. I know it knocks me on my rear, and I weigh 4 times what most of my dogs do.
That said, if Benedryl works, and it's the only thing that keeps a dog from having a seizure then have at it.

14. I didn't like it either. Seems to me, you're just getting the animal to sleep |
|
akin to giving it to a child on an airplane so they'll sleep and not bother anyone.
Benadryl is a fantastic drug. First choice for anaphylaxis, but I wouldn't be comfortable giving it to my dog.

...do you have any product recommendations for glucosamine for elder cats? My big old marmalade tabby is getting slower at climbing the stairs and I want to try that supplement. TIA.

Sweetie Pie runs from Donna's room and hides in the bathtub. Boogie and Rusty run from my room to Donna's room. Wheezie runs from Donna's room to my room. Jake goes out and plays in the rain or sleeps through it.
