lots of illnesses being spread and cross-multiplied to produce stronger variants!

with that horrible "Hands Across America" song that we were FORCED to sing.

I still have nightmares.

19. What was it supposed to accomplish?
I've forgotten. Was it like a new mail system - you handed a note to someone and they passed it on until it reached the recipient? Kind of like the pony express only without ponies?

20. Well - I think that was part of its uselessness
It was supposed to raise $50 Million for Poverty (it was put on by the USA For Africa guys) and there would be a human chain of people coast to coast (each would pay $10 to join). It cost $19 million to put on, and they only pulled in $20 million so they ended up not doing much.

At the time, the ads were everywhere (this may have been what cost the $19 million) and the usual string of self-absorbed boomer-era camera hogs showed up to participate (see "We are the World")

More proof that "they got the guns but we got the numbers" was a fallacy

21. I witnessed it (but did not participate) in Washington DC... I saw Ronald and Nancy
..and Mary Lou Retton holding hands in front of the White House. It didn't accompish anything.. just an empty feel-good gesture.
