8. Sadly, I spent a long time wanting to be liked by... |
|
...people for whom I had no respect. That's insecurity. At the same time, I had a massive ego, and felt superior to many, yet deep down I despised myself. That's a contradiction. And the people I didn't respect? The fact that I needed to be liked by them led to my respecting them, on some level, simply BECAUSE I wanted to be accepted by them. A tautology. Absurd, even.
Deep down, I did not have faith in myself for far too long. Those were dark days (years, decades). I am emerging from those shadows into the light of who I really truly am. It hasn't been an easy journey, but I'd recommend it!

9. I'm too freakin' old to care |
|
...if I conform to any standard it's usually an accident.
But the other cool thing about being old is that you don't have a great need to stand out or dress dramatically to PROVE you're a big non-conformist and rebel. Social recognition and attention is REEEEEALLY unimportant after reeling in a certain amount of years. I only know I'm eccentric when I start nattering on and people (usually gentiles) are looking at me like I'm from another planet. You kinda get the polite nods, while they smile uncomfortable and glance furtively at the nearest door.

That I'm about to start a thread about starting a clique so all my friends can post in it talking about how there is NO clique and we can all sit around congratulating ourselves on how much more awesome we are and how anyone that can't see it our way is either 1) Desperately insecure and paranoid and/or 2) jealous. Then my friends can all start another similar thread of their OWN - and I can post in theirs TOO. It will be SOOO awesome, and we awesome people can spend hours patting one another on the back and congratulating one another on our sheer awesomeness! Well - at least until some unwitting LOSER accidentally steps on the toes of one of our AWESOME people in some other thread ... then I have to divert my attention from back-patting long enough to join the rest of the awesome people in yelling at the person that DARED speak against the awesome one. And tell them they'd better WATCH THEIR BACK. And stuff!
Is that desperately needing to fit in enough for you?
As for the second part of your question - I'm more than relatively confident, without being overly so. ;)

That is an innate part of who you are. Stress and trauma have an impact - physically, mentally, and emotionally. That doesn't change who you ARE. People that know and love you understand that and wouldn't expect you to be 100% on point after having your foundations shaken. I understand the propensity to be hard on yourself for not being perfect enough, or strong enough, or OKAY enough - but you need to understand that the rest of us don't hold you to that same unrealistic and unreachable standard.

I have a very deep insecurity for various reasons, but over the years I've learned to function socially. I don't really fit in though because my goals and experiences are out of step.
I can be extremely confident if the situation calls for it though. Normally I avoid eye contact with people, but if the situation requires it I can be assertive and confident.
I don't think there is just one way to answer this question. I am both.

51. I don't want to "fit in"...I want to be myself in as many situations |
|
as possible.
Sometimes it is difficult, for example, at work. In the workplace, you usually have to conform to some degree.
However, saying that I "want to be myself" is really no big deal, because "myself" is usually at least acceptable to others in most circumstances.
