the deep "Hammond" sound. I was with several bands using these things, and they were heavy as hell to lug around, but the sound was unique. Greg Alman still uses one, and owes a lot to Jimmy McGriff. So does Steve Winwood, Traffic, many others.

He took the soul-jazz vibe of Jimmy Smith and added his own edge to it. He pioneered the dirtier, grindier funk Hammond tone. Another one of the greats is gone...damn...Brother Jack MacDuff, Jimmy Smith, and now McGriff. Seems the last organist left from the old guard is the beturbaned maestro Dr. Lonnie Smith...catch him while you still can.
Joey DeFrancesco and Tony Monaco are carrying the torch very well, I must say...the future of jazz organ looks pretty bright.
