Disabled people are "unsocial, stubborn and defensive". And don't call them "cripple" or "lame"
even if joking.

Disabled groups reacted with outrage yesterday to an official guide for assistants at the Beijing Olympic Games that describes them as unsocial, stubborn and defensive.

The guide for Chinese volunteers at the Games this summer explains that disabled people are a “special group” with “unique personalities and ways of thinking”.

The section of the manual entitled “Skills for helping the disabled” goes on to say: “Some physically disabled are isolated, unsocial, and introspective. They can be stubborn and controlling . . . defensive and have a strong sense of inferiority.

“Sometimes they are overly protective of themselves, especially when they are called crippled or paralyzed. Do not use ‘cripple’ or ‘lame’ even if you are just joking.”

2. Oh man, the Paralympics are gonna be fun
those are games for athletes with disabilities that take place in the Olympic city right after the main games. Those of you in the U.S. may be excused for not knowing this, sicne NBC is the only network in the entire world that carries the main Olympics but not hte Paralympics. Not even on any of its ubiquitous cable channels. :eyes:

Apparently people with disabilities are treated every bit as well in China as Tibetans or pro-democracy protesters. :sarcasm:

The Communist Party's desire for a healthy nation, characterised by the one-child policy, fostered deep prejudices that extended to forced sterilisations, bans on marriages between disabled people...

:grr: :banghead:

8. So thin skinned
Why would anyone get protective when called a cripple?

I love this line - "Do not use ‘cripple’ or ‘lame’ even if you are just joking.”
How would that joke go, anyway?

10. Insulting
But right about one thing, I can call myself a cripple (or a faggot) but it's offensive from anyone I don't know well enough to know they aren't being insulting.
As John Varley said "a disabled black woman can call herself a cripple and a n****r, but god help the able-bodied white man who uses either term". He wasn't being nasty but pointing out that words mean different things coming from different people.

Khash.

11. I'll never forget the disabled woman who I served at the gas station
many years ago when I was in high school. the law said (still says), you get full serve for self serve price if you have a disabled placard --providing you pull up to the self serve pump. it was my first day and i didn't know the drill, so then she disputed paying the full serve amount (seems like a bargain now ) when gas was like 1.20/gallon.

anyway, as i was walking away from her car, she *jumped* out of the car and *grabbed* my arm, quite strongly and yelled, "i'm handicapped!"

never underestimate the disabled! :hi:
