I was working in my front yard with our dogs when I opened the garage door. A huge gray rat was on the other side, and he didn't run away, he simply glowered at me like he owned the place.
Our dogs ran up wagging their tails and they happily greeted the damned rat like a friend. The rat then waddled off and vanished under the shelves.
All I can figure is that we kept pet rats when the dogs were young, so now they assume all rats living in the house are family.
I do not want rats living in my garage, but now I'd feel bad about putting traps or poison out there.
If I can catch the rat alive, what do I do with him?

2. If you can catch the rat alive... |

...drive it many miles away from your house before letting it loose.
Then go back and get the rest, because where there's one living, there are family and friends.

3. I don't know. Make sure it isn't rabid. I hate those traps and poison too. |
|
Catch it and release it somewhere back into the wilderness.

7. The dogs happily rip apart their chew toys. |

Maybe I can convince the dogs that rats are stuffed with polyester fluff and plastic squeakers.
