i'm kinda sorta maybe freaking out about saturday
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 10:43 PM by Ava
i took a verbal sat practice test today and did good - got a 760. this afternoon i took a whole practice test from beginning to end and got 610 on the math and 720 on the verbal(did the writing section too, but i don't have anyone to grade it yet.. will get that score tomorrow). so i got 1340 out of 1600 and i'm really freaking out. this is just too damn stressful. on one test my scores are high, and on the next they're lower(like on the one i took this afternoon)

1. I think you'll be okay, Ava...
WannaBe was really freaked too. I told her to get sleep and go in with a clear head. So I'll tell you that too. Get sleep, go to be with a clear head.

I know you're going to do awesome.

7. Reminds me of what a Japanese director once said
It's a curse to be a perfectionist, perfectionists are never satisfied. Something like that.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

5. The verbal ones are always a bit of a crapshoot.
I can't stand the verbal section on most standardized tests like that. They're usually peppered with badly worded questions that you have to end up guessing one of two possible answers on. Despite the fact that I've always been a language person and never liked math, my math and verbal sections on my SAT were within 10 points of each other.

6. the verbal section is what i expect to be better on
the math section i'm worried about. math is by far my least favorite subject and when it comes to standardized tests i usually do worst at math.

ugh.. too frustrating!

11. Well, if it makes you feel any better... you're 10 points ahead of me. :)
I only got a 1330. 660 for one, 670 for the other... and thinking back... I can't remember which was which. :)

8. Don't worry. You'll do fine.
Once you sit and start taking the test you'll see that it is just like the practice test.

When you start taking the test if you find yourself freaking out just stop and take a nice deep breath. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Slowly. The loss of a few seconds of test time is worth the relaxation to prevent mistakes.

It's really overblown. The test doesn't define you and all the admissions people know that.

The one thing I'm certain about you is your intelligence; as they say in the sports world (I know, I know), let the game come to you. Relax; you'll be fine:)

12. You'll have extra adrenalin the day of so you'll do that much better. Try
going for a brisk walk just before the exam to head all sorts of oxygen in your brain and to help calm.

Your verbal skills are way above average. Math? I don't know - but I think you are smart enough to do it.

Little secret - yes, colleges look at your SAT scores. But that's not everything. They also look at who you are, what you've done and stuff like that. Don't stress out over a fucking test!

My SAT scores (very high) only caused me trouble .

14. you're fine
Obviously you did ok on these, and would do just as well on the real thing. Stop taking these damn practice tests and go out an live your life. There's no point in adding stress to these things, especially when it's just a practice test that doesn't count for anything.

Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 12:07 PM by Ava
most of them were ones that if i had taken the time i could have gotten right

if nothing else at least this has taught me a strategy for the test, lol

btw, i am well aware that i added up 610 and 720 to get 1340. not sure if that was a typo on my part or just my brain frying

18. Ava remember two things
1) Only stress over things you can control.

2) The only thing you can control, is to study as hard as you can and be well rested for the test.

and good luck on your test.:hi:

19. thanks, i've studied like crazy
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 12:14 PM by Ava
my weakness is geometry.. no matter how many times i look at it and study it there are just some things in it that just don't make sense to me. i'm going to chill out for the rest of today and not be super stressed before the test - which is what i did for the ACT and my score suffered as a result.

*sigh* no matter what i'll be ok, that is the important thing i need to remember.

damn me and my perfectionism x(

20. Many athletes prepare the way you are doing
it's called positive imagery. You create a positive visualization in your head. In other words they picture themselves making the shot or catching the ball. It helps to dispel the stress and doubt and improve your performance. Look you are smart and you worked hard. That is how one is successful. So you WILL do well. Think about yourself acing the examine. visualize it. Think of yourself reading the questions and knowing the answer. See yourself breeze along. Picture that it's the end of the test and you are feeling good as you hand it in....

24. Relax.
If you don't like your score, you can retake the test.

Anyhow, while there's a bit of an overemphasis on standardized test scores for homeschooled applicants, your test scores alone won't get you into anyplace. Trust me, if they could, my lazy ass would have got a full ride to an ivy, and I assure you that did not happen.

You've got awesome and unique skills and experience that will stand out in applicants, and you'll get to go to a great school. Really, what school's not going to want a teenage applicant with your level of achievement? They don't need test scores to predict your success, because you already are a success.

25. get drunk tonight & take the test while you're hung over
Seriously - I went into the 2nd SAT and was sick as a dog the night before and spent the night tossing & turning and heavily medicated...and, I felt awful the next morning - very lethargic, stuffed up, weak from fever, headache, etc.

My SAT score went up exactly 100 points from the previous time I took it when I was healthy and had a normal night's sleep. Of course, that was back before electricity when they had only two parts on the test - but, I went from a 1200 to a 1300.

I never studied for the SAT and never took any prep classes, either. I wasn't aiming for Ivy League or anything - just wanted a good school somewhere in the northeast, and the 1300 guaranteed that for me.
