Anyone else ever get sick on vacation?
My family are out right now enjoying Frankfurt and I am stuck in what passes for 4 stars in Europe writing this post on DU after taking a long nap!

Stupid cold with ear congestion (might be morphing into ear infection)...

Life is not always fun and games... hope to get out for a bit with them later this afternoon.

Anyone else ever get sick on vacation?

1. Yes indeed--on my honeymoon!
We went to Costa Rica. Our itinerary was to hang out in the capital, San Jose, for a day and then travel to an eco-friendly resort on the coast for the rest of the two weeks, then back to San Jose for a night. We got married on a Saturday; Sunday morning I woke up with the sniffles; Monday morning I had a full-on cold...and we had something like a seven- or eight-hour flight.

Because of the cabin pressure and the recycled air, by the time we got to Costa Rica, my cold had turned into a sinus infection--a REALLY BAD one. I suffered in the San Jose hotel overnight, with Mr. MG saying over and over again, "That's it--we're going home," then we spent almost our entire free day the next day trying to get medical help instead of touring the city.

All I can say is THANK THE GODS FOR GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE. There was a huge medical complex in the center of the city; we walked around for a bit till we found the clinic designated for non-citizens. It was quite nice, and I got seen right away. Mr. MG dragged out his rusty Spanish, and after a few misunderstandings, we got the doctor to understand I had a sinus infection and needed "antibioticos" desperately.

She prescribed "antibioticos" the like of which I had NEVER had before--so powerful they completely knocked me on my ass (and made me sick to my stomach if I didn't eat a giant meal before I took a pill). But my sinus infection was gone in two days, and we enjoyed the rest of our honeymoon.

Our hotel was rather rustic (the way we like it), but since you're in a 4-star hotel, do they have a doctor on call? They might be able to help. Hope you feel better soon, JCMach1. Sending healing vibes so you can enjoy the rest of your vaca! :hi:

2. All the time!
I had the WORST sore throat on my honeymoon; I literally could not speak, my throat was so sore. I've gotten all kinds of ailments while on vacation.

3. Yes. On a trip to New Mexico, in Roswell, I came down with a mofo
of a cold. (Alien germs maybe?) At least, it was near the end of the trip.

Ever since, I always carry daytime and nighttime cold meds with me on my vacations. Just in case.

4. Yes, came down with flu in Aruba
24 hours after arriving there. Fever, sore throat, coughing etc. I left and came home after the second day of it. It was a good thing I did, I continued to get worse and worse and was glad to be home. Hard to fly with ear congestion. Ouch!

5. Hell yes
Got a case of Caesar's revenge while traveling around Italy back in the late 1970s. Not only are their public restrooms rather dank, but you have to PAY to use them and TIP the attendant. It's a miracle I didn't start spurting like one of Rome's fountains.

6. I had an impacted wisdom tooth
while in the Greek Islands - fortunately a visit to the pharmacy ended in the guy giving me a pile of antibiotics and pain killers plus some valium just because. :)

I got food poisoning in Switzerland ---- That was terrible.

You need to get to a pharmacy. They will help you.

7. OH HECK YEAH!! TWICE!!!
Both times on ski trips.

The first one was on a trip to New Mexico. I was driving out to a ski area called "Angelfire", about a 3 hour drive from Santa Fe. I felt it coming on on the drive out. Fever, aches, pains and fatigue. What was supposed to be a 4 day trip of skiing turned into 2 days of being totally bed ridden in the hotel. I did gather the will to drive back to Santa Fe, but spent another two days in bed once I got back. SUCKED!!

The second time was on a trip to Colorado to go skiing at Keystone. I think this time it was due to the fact I was incredibly out of shape and the elevation and dry air put me flat on my back for at least 3 days of a 5 day trip. Serves me right I guess.
