6. "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. " |
|
"He was known as a light pennance. Three "Hail Marys" and your back on the street with Father Rivera"
"You can prick your finger but no, no, no.. don't finger your prick"
"You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Okay. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't f*** around. Doesn't f*** around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with. For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that c***-sucker out with one visit."
****
There are other quotes I love .. they're just too numerous to sort through...and I'll laugh at things others might find stupid, like when he talks about calling Morningside Heights "White Harlem."
When I was a kid.. when we had cassettes and LP vinyl. We'd go to a friend's house where the folks worked and the house was empty (we're talking 5th, 6th, 7th grade) and we'd put on things like Richard Pryor (either "Was it Something I Said" or "Bicentennial N*****") or Monty Python (The "Holy Grail" soundtrack) or, of course, George Carlin's "Class Clown". Of course, we'd listen endlessly to the 7 dirty words, the bilabial fricative, and his many memories of growing up Catholic in Morningside Heights. Those were good days, and I'll miss George.

I swear I thought of George Carlin when a priest recently assigned me three Hail Marys and penance (and when a particular confessor worked so fast "you could see the line move!"). Those are involuntary thoughts, sort of like thinking of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life when the sermon topic is NFP.
But Carlin was so funny not merely because he was irreverent but because he captured life's absurdity so perfectly -- e.g., the differences between baseball and football; stock phrase parents say to kids; why your possessions are your stuff but other people's possessions are their shit, etc.
I'll miss him.

It's those sudden unscheduled "cornfield" and "housing development" stops that seem to interrupt the flow of my day! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phdw-Huwl_g&feature=related

thinking back he had a big influence on me. He's the first pro comedian I was really aware of as a fan. And I think his irreverence and clear questioning of religion made it so I didn't feel weird about my own lack of belief, like if this smart, talented, famous person felt like I did it must be pretty normal.
The absence of his dynamic presence will diminish the world, but he already contributed much.

He was the first concert I ever went to at the age of 16 and I have been able to look to him for humor and wisdom ever since. I truly feel like part of me is missing today and I think this will hurt for awhile.

41. Me and my friend used to sit in back of algebra class and listen to "A Place for my Stuff" |
|
This was in the 8th grade when Walkmans first came out. Our algebra teacher gave us detention and confiscated the walkman. After school during detention we played "A Place for my Stuff" for our algebra teacher and we had the guy totaly cracking up. We even stayed a bit longer after detention was over to laugh our asses off with our algebra teacher. Good memories, good times, thanks George.

He was a legend. Along with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, probably the most important comic of the modern era.
