Anyone remember Mike Royko? |
|
He was a columnist for the Chicago Tribune (and the Sun-Times for a while before that). He's been gone since 1997, but he was an institution in Chicago in his day, and some of his stuff ws just hilarious. He would have had a field day with the Bush regime. The third page of the front section of the Tribune has never been the same since. My local paper here used to reprint his columns three times a week. For some reason the passing of George Carlin makes me think of him.

1. The very first political book I ever read was "Boss: Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicago". |
|
Royko has a special place in my political life.
His columns could be just plain LOL hilarious also.

4. He was great. I keep trying to read John Kass* but almost every time I >>> |
|
>>> get about a 4th or a 3rd into the column, stop, and ask myself 'Why the hell am I reading this? This is going nowhere.' Meanwhile really interesting columnists like Eric Zorn and Mary Schmich languish in the Metro section.
(*Kass took over Royko's space in the Trib, for those unfamiliar.)

12. Same thing happens to me |
|
I've tried ever since they put Kass on page 2, but he's no Royko. I've probably made it all the way through only 2 or 3 of Kass' columns.

Royko was my entry into the wonderful world of politics. In HS, I read his columns and little else.

7. He was far more entertaining than his successor. |
|
The spectacularly assholish John Kass.

11. He was one of my faves. |
|
I always looked forward to his column, which The Seattle Times carried.
And yes, he would have had a field day with Bushco.
