I just discovered "Dexter" |
|
I don't get Showtime, but I recently bought a NetFlix box, and last night we watched the first two episodes of Dexter. It's about a serial killer who learned at an early age that he'd never be able to shake his need to kill, so he channels his compulsion into his work. He becomes a police forensics guy and secretly kills off other killers, satisfying his urges, and making the streets safe. Like other psychopaths, he keeps souvenirs of his victims, and cannot feel emotion the way others do.
We've only watched the first two episodes, but it seems to have potential.

We watched three episodes and realized we hated all the characters. Hard to keep going once that happens. :D

I actually had a really hard time making it through the first half of season 1, but after that...it's amazingly good.

8. You probably really liked season 2 then...(Spoiler!!!) |
|
Rita whines so much he dumps her for 4 episodes and his sister becomes bearable while she was dating Lundy. Lila made things fun.
Then they killed the character I most-closely identified with. (Doakes) I'm not sure I'm up for a season three. I kind of like the fact that they didn't stay true to the books though. With the exception of the first season, the books have a completely different narrative. They're different enough that each stands on its' own as enjoyable.
You just can't jump between them...too many things are different. In the books for example, Rita's children are complete budding sociopaths who Dexter has taken under his wing to educate. Cody more-so than Astor.

They all have alliterative titles:
Darkly Dreaming Dexter Dearly Devoted Dexter Dexter in the Dark
The books are much darker, if you can believe that...because they've actually softened the characters for TV.
Edit: Most fans hate the third book. You might want to skip it. It's kind of the Godfather part III of Dexter. Hoping that there is a fourth which redeems the third one. I liked it except one plot element that irked me greatly.

7. I loved the first season. |
|
I decided to read the books after seeing the show. The books are not nearly as good as the show, but they are interesting. I don't get Showtime either, so I'll probably have to watch the second season on DVD.

13. Someone told me a few months ago that I reminded them of Dexter. |
|
:scared:
The books were pretty good, but not great. I haven't seen the show yet, but it does look intriguing. Just not sure how far they can take the character on a week to week basis.

14. I hate Cartoon Network's original programming |
|
Lame, unfunny scripts and ugly animation.
Glad we're all on the same page.

23. I didn't need to see pieces of women with their blood drained before |
|
they were sliced up like pepperoni.
And no, not "Exactly", Taverner. See Reservoir Dogs for how some gore works, but going over the top in this case doesn't.

24. That's the entire point of the storyline though... |
|
I don't want to give spoilers, but the blood drainage is absolutely essential to the plot. As is the cutting.

17. I love that show, and I don't usually watch shows with that much grossness. |
|
I'm usually quite bothered by such shows, but that show just drew me in and fascinated me from the beginning. Dexter is such an excellent, complex character and the actor is quite good at conveying his complexities. It's a very well-written show, lots of good characters, especially Doakes.

19. I liked it at first, but it got old |
|
It would have made an excellent movie - but its just gets goofy later on.
The guy who plays Dexter, Michael C Hall, is excellent. I was an avid fan of Six Feet Under and thought he totally owned the Dexter role - but all of the other actors in it are kinda bleh.
