124. The Church - Destination
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYdED9ngg_E

Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling
Can never cut below the floor, or penetrate the ceiling.
In the space between our houses, some bones have been discovered,
But our procession lurches on, as if we had recovered.

Draconian winter unforetold.
One solar day, suddenly youre old.
Your little envelope just makes me cold,
Makes destination start to unfold.

Our documents are useless, or forged beyond believing.
Page forty-seven is unsigned, I need it by this evening.
In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly forming.
Something eating up our days, I feel it every morning.
Destination, destination.

Its not a religion, its just a technique.
Its just a way of making you speak.
Distance and speed have left us too weak,
And destination looks kind of bleak.

Our elements are burned out, our beasts have been mistreated.
I tell you its the only way well get this road completed.
In the space between our bodies, the air has grown small fingers.
Just one caress, youre powerless, like all those clapped-out swingers.
Destination, destination.

50. I went to college in Fredonia, NY -- have seen the Maniacs many times.
They played at our dance marathon in 1982 --not sure how old Natalie was but she was young.

I sent a letter to the Maniacs after "Wishing Chair" came out. I received a hand written letter back from Natalie. I still have it!

Robert Buck was one of my favorite guitar players of all time...he is missed.

But he specifically designed the vibrato intro to be an instantly recognizable riff- so there'd be no mistaking it...

34. Sweet....
When they played a local club near my university, My friends and I went to the club's affiliated restaurant to eat dinner and start drinking several hours before the show and we got seated at the table next to the band. They ordered a shitload of food (which we were initially thinking it was because the meal was comped, but they ate every last scrap) and we ended up yakking with them until they had to leave to get ready.

Nice fellas, they were.

Hang Time was a phenomenal record. One of those ones that I absolutely played the ever living hell out of. They really fell hard in that post Nirvana era trying to grab for the brass ring. They got it for a brief period but a great band was lost in the process.

The first time I saw them they were totally drunk and they decided to swith instruments for a couple of songs.

I saw Dave Sharp at an acoustic show in New Orleans in 1996. I could easily have walked up to him and asked for an autograph and probably had a beer with him. Unfortunately, I completely vapor locked. To a Gen X "big music" nerd, seeing Dav Sharp in person is like a Boomer running into a Kink, Stone, or Animal.

That is when Dave was still pretty cool.

at least not in the UK, anyway. :)

They had another song up here in Canada that got airplay (from the same album as Whisper to a Scream), "Love is a Wonderful Colour".

I came across the Best of Icicle Works at my library about 10 years ago. Curious as to what else they put out, I got it out and liked what I heard.

Here are a few more selections: (unfortunately live isn't quite as good as the studio versions)

Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 03:57 PM by Common Sense Party
I know I'm getting old.

But I can't help thinking the music back in the 1980s was 100 times better than what is out now.

Even the BAD music from the 80s is better than most of what passes for music now.

Agree? Disagree? Call me names?

88. Eh... Depends on what you like.
There were some amazing things happening in the background of the 90s, as well, and some of it even bubbled up to the top. Earlier today, someone mentioned Squirrel Nut Zippers. Theres no way "Hell" or something like that would have been able to get on the radio if it was released ten years in either direction. I remember going to see live Jazz and Ska (the traditional, Jamaican kind... I'm not talking about suckfests like No Doubt), Reggae, Swing and Blues every night of the week. Independent CD stores were everywhere. Without the 90s, I don't think I would have developed the ear for music I have now.

89. There were SOME good things in the 1990s, but overall I just
feel the quality has gone down greatly. Most of the "new" stuff today is really just uninspired rehashes of 1970s music, and rip-offs of early new wave.

91. That, I can agree with.
Though, the 80s aren't off the hook either. Two things bother the fuck out of me, and they're both related.

1. The CD replaced tapes and records, stupidly. Granted, tapes sucked balls. But Records have higher fidelity and a greater frequency range than, either. CDs may trick you into thinking it's cleaner, but records are the absolute closest to being able to be in the studio while a band is recording. Also, part of the tape/record phase out included making record players out of plastic parts. Thanks Sony, you assholes.

2. Producers realized that most music is played is done on portable devices, like CD players or car radio. Say hello to a producers wet dream: compression! Yay, now everything sounds like ass in a bag.

So yeah, we have the 80s to thank for alot of bullshit.

103. The rootsy sound never seems to work commercially
I can't figure that out. Bands like the Long Ryders and Lone Justice made some incredible msic, but it was too twangy for rock fans, not twangy enough for country, and, in the 1980s, lost amid a pile of fetid hair metal and weak synthpop.

They did an ad for Miller Beer, believe it or not. Miller was sponsoring a series of concerts by emerging bands, and they had the Long Ryders and the Del Fuegos (a rootsy band from New Hampshire via Boston) cut spots for them.

Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 10:36 AM by Symarip
Just look who they brought in to play on the Naked album... Everyone from Johnny of The Smiths to Kirsty MacColl. Easily my favorite Talking Heads record. Speaking of Kirsty, I was thinking about how great her voice was last night. Kind of bummed me out to think she left us so early.

Rest in peace, Kirsty. You sure are missed.

One of my favorite Kirsty MacColl appearances in a song: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ltiY-BqvOIU

I have a hard time holding back a tear when in the song she says, "you took my dreams from me when I first found you".

Considering that's where I first saw them, on the college/university circuit. I don't consider them particularly 'alternative'.

They also opened for Crowded House in Toronto in the mid-80's, and blew them off the stage. Crowded House was a huge disappointment.

But I have to say, their approach is complete bullshit. I lose respect for people who refuse to tour and decide to pop in and out when they feel like it.

Next time, I might not be listening... Unless your album is really good, which it probably will be. Fuck. They've got me hooked.

242. What is their approach? I heard that Harriet wanted to raise her
kids. I'm all for them having a sane, stable home life.

They could release albums and not tour, but not if they're on a major label. They'd have to do it independent.

244. Well, that's not exactly the case....
They quit to raise their children out of the way of the limelight. I can't see any fault in that.

And they certainly did tour. I saw them twice in Louisiana.

I may have to start a 90s alternative thread...

That is a killer tune, though.

Yes, the Top 40 crap sucked donkey wienies in the 80s, but the songs on this thread are unique and brilliant.

251. I guess not all grunge was garbage, but a majority was.
But I lament the loss of so many of these "college"/alternative bands. They showed promise and brilliance for an album, or maybe two, and then disappeared.

263. This IS the 80s to me: Crowded House-Don't Dream It's Over
I saw them do it on MTV during Spring Break and it just gave me chills to see everyone singing along. Don't ever let them win!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZZfuCJ970w

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
Theres a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream its over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now Im towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but theres no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the t.v. page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream its over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now Im walking again to the beat of a drum
And Im counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream its over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win
