7. My daughter just switched majors............ |
|
she opted out of Neuro-Science and is now thinking Psych with the hope of one day becoming like yourself. I told her that she's not going to get rich, but I think she's more concerned about being able to look at herself in the mirror in the morning. For that, I'm a proud poppa, I've raised a daughter with a social conscience. There aren't enough good folks like you to go around, thanks and keep up the good work.

13. I have a friend who has an MSW and makes $70K a |
|
year. Not all social workers toil for $20K. Many get licensed (like my friend who has an LCSW) and counsel people. Insurance companies pretty much pay an LCSW the same rate as a PhD doing psychotherapy.
My friend works with special needs kids in one of the suburban school districts in my area. She works her tail off but makes a good salary and gets summer off to boot! In order to get where she is she has had to continually take classes as her salary grade depends upon the number of CEUs (continuing education units) she has received since starting employment with them.

Helping others is not a top priority here. I make great money compared to many social workers in this state because I work in a private for profit agency. Regarding social workers doing private practice. This is the wave of the future. Insurance companies love us because we are cheaper. At my place of business, social workers do ALL of the therapy, psychologists are used for testing, and psychiatrists take care of the meds. My long-term goal, within the next five years, is to establish a private practice. I think it is a stereotype that all social workers are poor. You can make good money in the field if you would like, just pick the right area to go into.

10. I considered going back to school for an MSW |
|
...but I couldn't afford school. I know people who have done it and had to keep their old day jobs when they were done to pay off student loans because entry-level salaries are so low.

11. I run into a lot of them |
|
I have family that take in state children. Both these women have redone their homes to care for these children. Social workers visit a lot and they are very nice. The children that are ill are very hard to care for but these women do a great job. It is a lot of work. The state watchers them very well.

18. My best friend has her MSW. She teaches visually imparied kids and |
|
also counsels kids through a coop of rural schools.
I am thinking about going back to school, and social work is on my short list of possibilities. I definitely want to study spanish, and there are always lots of positions in the houston area for social work/counseling/case management, etc for bilingual people. If I was starting all aover, I think I would have gone for social work with a concentration in latin american studies. Now, though, it's harder, because I have to work full-time and have to find a way to pay for school. Right now I am trying to get a job at U of H. I figure that would be a good step to take... make taking classes much easier for one thing.
Currently, I am an employment counselor.

I just wanted to say hello. I'm also a LCSW. It seems that when you work with the people that most need help you don't make much so it is indeed a true service. I salute all social workers for their work with the homeless, mentally ill, and disadvantaged.

keep up the good work. Your work most probably sucks in a lot of ways but you are underpaid and overowkred and can't give your clients what they deserve. Stay true!
