Back in the 1980s Wal-Mart was pretty much limited to the states of the lower Midwest and the deep South, with a little touch in parts of Colorado and New Mexico and almost none east of the Appalachians. All of a sudden they had to expand out of the heartland and Bible Belt - I wonder what prompted the migration? Were the existing markets finally saturated?
