AUGHH! It's not "real-a-ty" and "real-a-tor"!
SOMEONE, whose name will not be disclosed but may be married to me, mispronounces "realtor" and "realty" chronically. His brother is a realtor, so it just makes it all the more heinous.

At least he quit pronouncing "chipotle" as "chipol-tay".

2. I hate that too! It is real-tor and real-ty.
Why do people put an "a" in that? I don't get it!

3. The owner and managing partner of a consulting firm I worked for could not say 'the-o-retically'
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 10:11 AM by Richardo
He said it 'theory-etically'. Unfortunately he said it a lot, in client presentations. :eyes:

5. My fourth grade teacher couldn't say "older people".
It always came out "odor peep-o".
That one is stuck in my head forever.

8. It's also Realtor or REALTOR, not realtor. Realtor is a
registered trademark of the National Association of Realtors, and is basically a brand name. ;)

15. Yeah, but the all-caps thing is just stupid
Ooh, look at me, I'm a registered trademark! BFD. Lotsa trademarked stuff out there, but they don't shout at me.

Capitalizing is fine, but all-caps is just grandstanding.

17. Oh, I agree completely. And I am a REALTOR also.
I also cannot stand the NAR's extreme right-wing politics, either.:puke:

11. Never realized before
just how many of these mispronunciations there are that drive me nuts!

A few more:
gel-ah-penn-o or hala-pee-no instead of jalapeno (haul-a-pen-yo)
Or two from my assistant principal:
"commANded performance" instead of commended performance (state tests)
"exemplaRARy" instead of exemplary (school rating)

16. Not sure I agree about "hala-pee-no" belongs with the others you mention
I mean, I don't harp on "cruh-sahnt" instead of the correct "kwah-sohn'". A certain amount of anglicizing foreign words is okay in my book.

Now "croy-sent", on the other hand...
