I think I may have found a litter box the beagle won't be able
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 12:08 PM by mycritters2
to use as a dessert tray. Haven't bought it yet, but I'm considering it.

Anyone have one of these:

It may be the end of the search for the dog-proof litter box. Maybe.

1. Is the opening too small
for the beagle to climb in?

3. I think so. She could get her head in, but the litter is far enough from the door
that I still don't think she could reach it. I think it would work.

9. Looks like it
as long as the cat will go in, and most will and probably appreciate the privacy.

keeps away the border collie, can't reach the bottom.

seriously, this works...
it's easy to clean and the top just pops off.
oh, and there are no "side" leaks.

easiest boxes ever

4. I've thought about this one, too.
One of my cats is slightly disabled in his back legs. Don't know why--three vets, three theories. Might be related to kittenhood malnutrition, might be genetic, might be from traumatic injury. At any rate, he has trouble jumping--which is not always a bad thing :) So, I'm not sure the top entry would work for him. The other two would be okay with it, though.

I've actually considered getting one of each. What the hell! I should be spending that stimulus check!!

5. Have you tried one with a swinging door on it?
It might deter the dog if as he went to stick his nose through, the door would be resting on his nose. My daughter has one, not sure where she got it. The door swings from the top and of course, swings both in and out.

6. A swinging door is no deterrent to a determined beagle.
But one of the cats was afraid of it!

8. They can definitely be determined.
I wondered if some cats might be frightened. Grandkitty took to it right away, but I've had a few that I don't think would like it. We had one that didn't like the dome on his throne.

As to doggy access, I couldn't say :P

11. You must have me on ignore- please Somebody forward this.

I posted on your first thread on the subject. This litter box is cheap & "dog proof". I have six dogs, ALL about beagle sized & none of them can eat poop anymore. You can purchase this box at Petsmart or Petco, I believe they are around 20 bucks.

As far as me being on ignore, I can't blame ya. Heck, I haven't figured out how to put myself on ignore yet or I would have done it already!

14. Some of my opinions are questionable.
I really do want mycritters to consider the "clevercat" litter box. I have three of them for my two cats & not ONCE have any of the dogs been able to get in to eat the poop.

18. Is that an "automatic cleaner" one? I would be scared to use one!
I could see old Chairman Meow or Flea Taxi in it when it started to clean, it would scare the poop out of them!(probably all over the floor outside the box)
Seriously though, mt guys got used to the clever cat in minutes. They seem to enjoy the privacy too.

27. the automatic boxes actually have a motion detector and timer so
the box won't clean itself if a cat is in it. It waits a certain amount of time after the cat leaves the box.

30. Nope...it just uses big pellets and a pad underneath that catches the urine.
Its big selling point is that it's supposed to be odorless. Which it is, because our cats refuse to use it.

26. what do you not like about the Breeze. I bought one and am not sure
my boys have actually tried it yet.

I have been using sifter boxes which have both good and bad points.

But with two cats who hold it all day then flood the box, even super clumping master litter is overwhelmed.

29. My cats refuse to use it.
Even using the suggestions in the box, they refuse to use it. My oldest cat slept in it.

So I had to pull the old litterbox back out. It's a sifter, too, but at least there's something to sift out of it.

35. I fear I may have the same situation here, Maddy. I just put it out as a 5th
box to see what they would do. I can tell that someone has walked around in it but nobody has actually used it that I can see. I think it is a great concept if they will use it . Trying all the suggestions, to no avail as yet.

I have 4 cats and 4 boxes they are using. They seem to like to pee in one and poop in the others and there is always one box that has next to nothing in it when I change them out.

21. I don't have you on ignore, Wcross ("Cross" is a family name-and I don't ignore my cousins),
but this is the only post by you showing up in My DU. Someone else also suggested the top entry box. I think it would work for two of my cats, maybe for all three. One has a slight disability in his hindlegs (hips, actually) and may have trouble jumping out. But the other two could use it for sure. I'm thinking about getting one of each. My eldest has flutd, and we should have at least a couple of boxes around.

So, yep, it's a good idea.

And I'm not ignoring you, honest!!

24. It might work for the cat with troubles.
He/she wouldn't have to "jump" to get out, just climb. I am sorry for thinking you had me on ignore, I thought that if you did you should still try this type of litter box. It is dog proof in my experience.

I guess I could add paranoia to the list of reasons why I think I am on every ones ignore list. Sometimes I venture into general discussion & piss off a whole bunch of people with my honest opinion. Seems like if you claim the sky is blue you will be lectured on how wrong you are by somebody.

34. More or less.
I hope you find a good solution to your litter box search. Until I found those "clevercat" boxes I was getting worried about my dogs. I wonder what cat litter does to their digestive systems, I was always worried they would get "stopped up" & have to get surgery or something. After I got the boxes I started worrying that the dogs would kill the cats because they could no longer enjoy the cat poop. I worry too damn much.

13. Have you considered just putting the box in a hall
and installing a baby gate?

We've kept dogs out of the boxes for 30 years that way, after finding that any sort of covered litterbox quickly becomes off limits to the cats because the smell and fumes build up no matter how many times you clean it.

I moved the gate up far enough the cats can get UNDER it, but the dogs can't...even the little one who is beagle size.

It *should* work. The miniature schnauzer I have here CAN get in and get the poop, but the beagle should be large enough to be thwarted.
