Barenaked Lady busted for coke, riding the white horse.
According to cops, Lady Godiva ain't the only bare-naked lady riding a white horse.

Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page has been popped by cops in Central New York for allegedly possessing cocaine.

Cops in Manlius, NY say early last Friday morning officers saw a suspicious car with its doors open sitting outside an apartment building. While checking out the car, they observed a man and a woman inside one of the apartments sitting at a table with an "unknown white capsule" with a powdery substance in front of them. After a field test, the cops say the substance tested positive for cocaine.

4. Well, really, do you really find the headline "Rock Star Does Drugs!" all that surprising?

8. I know! A little prudence, fer chrissake.
I think, when you operate at that level, you tend to forget that a vast swath of society does not engage in the same vices you do. When you're deeply involved in a national, touring rock band, the shock is when you find out that someone doesn't do drugs.

Either way... good job getting these dangerous criminals off the street!

Or... well... out of their apartment!

12. BNL isn't exactly known for their rock & roll lifestyles
They are a bunch of nerdy Canadian suburban dads. I didn't know he was even separated from his wife.

21. Me too, BNL
I love those guys. Hate to see something bad happen to any of them.

He always struck me as troubled, though--seemed to have a dark side that came through in the lyrics, you know? :(

22. I hear what you're sayin'
"He always struck me as troubled, though--seemed to have a dark side that came through in the lyrics, you know?"

Any songs in particular that come to mind? My first thought was 'When I Fall' but that's an Ed song, innit? Hell, lots of Steven's songs are lighter on the surface, but dark and deep the closer you look.

In that sense, "The Old Apartment" has some slightly disturbing elements, but the song itself is fun and... well, rockin'.

23. Oh, lots
Of course, a lot of the time you get the Lennon/McCartney dual credit for words and music, Steve/Ed, so I suppose technically it's hard to tell who's having the dark thoughts...but...right from Gordon you had "Enid", "There were times when I wanted to hurt you/And there were times when I know that I did/There were times when I thought I would kill you/But can you blame me I was only a kid"... "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" always got me, with "I put my hands around your neck" and "The Flag (solely by Steve) has "You know last night remember when I tried to choke you?/I didn't mean it, I was drunk." :scared:

Not to say that arguments and violence with significant others translates into a drug problem directly, but if the boy has demons, he might try to run away from them using alternative substances.

I dunno. I've got almost all of BNL's albums and I've seen them in concert a bunch of times, and Steve always struck me as having a shadow, if you know what I mean. (Hard to prove, my saying that "in hindsight", but it's the truth.) It's a testament to their talent that they can mask dark things with funny lyrics and peppy music and stage antics.

24. True
I've just got a real soft spot for him (all of them really). Feels like I've known him for years. I'm also sad to hear he and his wife are separated. They've been together since H.S. :(

25. Do you really know him? (Gah! Gah! Gah!)
Or does it just feel like it? I've been a fan since the early '90s, and because they have such a fondness for Rochester (because we liked them first! :D ), I feel kinda proprietary myself!

Hey, did you see their Lilac Festival concert at the Highland Park Bowl, waaaay back in...um...I wanna say '95 or something? Excellent show!

Though he did personally answer a couple of questions of mine on their blog. :D

I've seen them three or four times since 1994 (not the Lilac Festival though). They've always been an excellent show.

I want to go on their Ships & Dips cruise next time. If there is a next time. :(

9. Damn! I love Steven Page.
I've always thought it unfair that Ed Robertson is seen by many as the main singer-songwriter of BNL, that being the result of their biggest U.S. hits being primarily Robertson's compositions.

I sincerely hope all works out well for Steven.

If you only have a passing familiarity with BNL, please take a couple of minutes to check out a great song and an awesome Steven Page performance:

Steven has been my self-proclaimed "boyfriend" for years. He's also a very vocal liberal.

I'm really surprised about this.

"War On Drugs" is pretty dark. Perhaps more personal than I thought?
