Poll question: How many computers do you actively use?
This excludes 'virtual machines' but includes physical laptop and desktop computers.

I have one desktop, and one laptop.

2 for me.

1. Question - Are you counting work machines too?
Or just ones at home?

5. In that case - 4.
17" Macbook Pro
17" Toshiba Sattelite
Desktop computer in office - XP MCE
HTPC in living room - Vista Ultimate

Although - the HTPC isn't technically in "active use" until my new tv arrives in a week. Turns out they don't work so well with CRTs! But I have used it a little, and it will be used daily a week from now.

The sad thing is I'd have even MORE if I had any sort of decent electrical system. I'd have at least 2 more desktops at my L-shaped desk in the office if I could plug anything else in without blowing the circuit.

Me --> is computer nerd. :dunce:

A Windows XP-based laptop for work, and a PowerMac G5 at home. I'll be adding a Macbook of some sort over the next few months.

9. 1 1/2 - I pretty much always use my laptop, but occasionally I'll use my wife's desktop
if she's not here and it's closer. What's a virtual machine?

26. an extra operating system apart from the main one on a computer
I'm using a mac for this, and use it for most day to day stuff, but I have a copy of my old windows computer on this hard drive as well. It runs with a program called parallels. My main OS is mac, but within it I have a "virtual" pc. I'm trying to use the XP less and less, but there are still programs on it that I either can't get a mac version of or are too expensive to buy again.

10. I was surprised when I counted 4
Three desktops and one laptop. One of the desktops is going away eventually. That would be the one I'm typing on right now. I'm still trying to make sure everything's migrated to the new one which I currently use for e-mail and Sim City Societies.

24. Diagnosis?
Some sort of data surge that blew the motherboard, or something. I got the HD back, but everything else in the rig was destroyed.

13. Two for me as well, my dear Hypno...
I use primarily my desktop, which is where I am now...

My laptop is very secondary, unless I'm travelling, when it becomes essential!

:hi:

20. 4: 1 main work workstation, 1 main home desktop, 1 reg laptop, 1 tablet.
I thought the tablet would be really cool but I really just use it because it's lighter than my favorite laptop.

25. Four, all networked.
About four months back I was given a perfectly good P4 Intel Server machine, which I promptly stuffed full of hard drives of all capacities, putting all my multimedia and other files on it. Then I have my business workhorse computer, which I use for backing up client hard drives, file recovery, various multimedia functions, etc. Then there's my "main" computer, which I use for everything else, such as watching said multimedia stuff, browsing the net, doing my hobby graphics stuff, and so on. My final one is beside my bed- the monitor and mouse are on a small roll-away cabinet. Sometimes I enjoy retiring early to my waterbed and watching movies and browsing DU in comfort.

I did have a laptop I kept in the throne room, but I just finished rebuilding it and I gave it to my sister as a surprise. In fact, she just got it yesterday. Thrilled her to death, it did!

29. Two, but the laptop gets the vast majority of attention
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 11:45 PM by Awsi Dooger
I can recline on the bed and tinker with the iBook, specifically Excel workbooks involved in my job. I keep them open along with Firefox and maybe one other application, taking needed breaks between the inputting and calculating. Before I got the iBook I was stuck at the computer chair and had headaches and ass aches galore.

The dualie desktop has larger hard drives so I primarily do video work on them. It also has a better DVD burner so I cut disks there.

My printer is hooked up to the desktop but I can easily move the USB cable and switch to the iBook.

Overall I think I do best when I skip the computer threads, at least on this site.:)

32. Well...one at home
I didn't see the damn "only home computers" thing...but at work, I have:

the Power Macintosh G4/866 I use for setting jobs up

the ho-made PC that gets used when I'm setting more than two jobs up

the ho-made PC that's got the Onyx production RIP for my Mutoh printers, and a copy of Photoshop for when I need to set up a second job while I'm setting up the first one

and soon to come...the EFI Fiery computers that will run my Vutek printers, so that will be either five machines or seven depending on whether we get two or four Vuteks in the first batch.

At home I just have my G3/350.
