http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr8CEDB7fbgTwo words suffice, really: derivative pablum.
This hokey, overlong, under-edited mess barely warrants additional words, but here they are. A blatant rip-off of the Kurosawa classic, itself an ingenious retelling of a ubiquitous myth with roots in prehistory, this latest insult to our national intelligence makes pauly Shore appear almost Hitchcockian.
I found this stultifyingly shallow work replete with unnecessary trendy gimmicks, such as the jump cuts and rapid, jerky handheld camera movements that are so popular (and overused) today. And, frankly, the entire black-white subplot -- though admittedly admirable in intent -- was superfluous and ultimately confusing, further rendering this bloated exercise in heavyhanded social commentary virtually unwatchable as a cohesive project. Similarly, the soundtrack was unimaginative and dull, barely worth listening to. I can only hope that this offering does not somehow catch the public's collective fancy, guaranteeing continued production of such drivel, the cinematic equivalent of empty calories.
If one
must 'translate' classic film works of other national provenance, following the lead of this atmospheric Swedish reimagination would be a step in the right direction:
