I just got chewed out for not cheerfully driving an hour at 11:00 pm for work
I am on-call tomorrow night starting at 5:00 pm, which means I will work my normal 9-5 shift, then work on-call from 5 to 9, then have another regular day of 9 to 5. I was hoping to get some sleep tonight, but my boss just called to ask me to go do something that would involve an hour on the road. When I asked if she could please see if someone else might do it, she chewed me out for not being a team player.

I wish I could just explain to her that if I don't get enough sleep I become unstable and begin to think I ought to be dead. But if I told her about my tendency to suicidal ideation if my serotonin drops, I would probably get fired as a security risk (even though I never, ever think of hurting anyone else).

Now I am upset that I got chewed out, and that will make it hard to sleep even with the Ambien.

I know I should be grateful I have a job that pays a living wage and that I usually enjoy. But i'm so certain it's precarious due to my inability to be a nonstop dynamo of energy that I will spend at least the next day with my guts tied in knots fearing that the ax is gonna fall.

I feel rather bleak and lonely. :-(

Tucker

1. Everything will be fine
And I don't think that you were out of line setting boundaries.

2. well you made a smart decision to say no based on your circumstances and demands
and now that you've made that decision, you need to not beat yourself up about it.

but i understand that anxiety and stress from someone giving it to you like that can't simply be turned off at a moment's notice.

just remember, set your own expectations (reasonable ones though).

in this case, you are living up to your reasonable expectations and that's the most important thing. thus, if the boss doesn't think you are, that's secondary, ultimately it is.

hang in there and remember that what you were asked to do would be hard for anybody to pull off.

and obnoxious. :(

When making a really inconvenient request like that, managers should treat it as a favor if you can say yes, and understandable if you say know.

Give your situation, it's unreasonable to ask you to do this extra work tonight. What the hell was she thinking? x(

I hope you sleep well tonight despite this. Please think about your friends here at DU, instead of thinking about work.

4. Sleep well, AlienGirl. And maybe keep a journal or
document this, just for your own sake. You made a good decision based on your next few days -- just note the time, date, circumstances of her asking you this and you asking if she could try to find someone else. Good to keep records, and it will only take you a minute or two.

I am feeling pretty awful myself right now, I do understand.
