Damn, I'm in the mood for some chips and salsa. |
|
I might just have to take a drive to the convenience store.

3. What kind of chips and salsa did you get? |
|
My favorite are from a local taco stand here, El Nopalito (Encinitas, CA).

Just plain old Tostidos with Tostito's salsa. The more I think about it the less kick ass it really was.
It suited my needs at the time though.

5. I am nearly always in the mood for chips and salsa, especially really good ones |
|
from my local Mexican eatery. They have seriously thin chips and dynamite salsa.
This is a very competitive town, Mexican food wise and they are at the top
do not even get me started on the spinach enchiladas

9. you can make your own in a snap: take a can of stewed tomatoes and some of |
|
those jalapenos in a jar that you use for nachos. Combine in food processor or blender and pulse. You don't want puree here, just chunks. I puree the peppers first then put in the tomatoes and pulse.
Now if you have time to plan this, get some fresh serranos and some cilantro and do the same thing. Good stuff.
Fresh chiles are a whole other dimension, but the jalapeno in a jar are damn handy, and you can keep stewed tomatoes and jarred chiles around all the time.
Weight Watchers reduced fat chips: Take corn or flour Tortillas and cut into wedges. Spray a cookie sheet with non stick spray and put the tortilla wedges on the cookie sheet, then spray them with the spray. Bake at 450 until they start to brown.
Yeah they aren't quite the same, but will do the trick when you really crave the salsa anyway. You can do this with pita bread too for hummus dips

I would never use canned tomatoes and jarred jalapenos. I live in CA where the fruits and veggies flourish and the only way to go is fresh baby!!
I currently have 5 roma tomato plants with well over 50 tomatos ripening and many more on the way; 1 jalapeno plant with over 25 peppers growing on it and lots more buds, and just acquired a pear tomato plant that I'm hoping will fruit before the winter comes.
I'm all for the convenience factor, though, but I'm darned stubborn! :) I can't eat it if it's not fresh; just like me and my pasta sauce... make it weekly and keep it frozen for the pasta cravings :)

13. lucky you to have the fresh supplies!!! I too prefer that when available but |
|
for emergencies, the other is acceptable.
for the record, I think the MexiChain Casa Gallardo made their salsa that way. Which sort of totally destroys their claim to be truly Mexican ..but the person who gave me the recipe worked there and said that was how they made their salsa.

15. LOL... Fresh, the chain restaurant way... |
|
I have never been to Texas or anywhere close by, but my coworker is from Houston. Every time she goes out she stops at a place called Papacitas (Sp?) or maybe its Papados?? But, the point is that she gets a bunch of their chips and salsa and bring it back for the office. They have some darned good chips there... salsa is okay. :)

16. Pappasitos is a pretty big chain, and their food is good. They are Houston based |
|
Pappadeaux is a sister chain, same company featuring seafood and cajun food. Also quite tasty. In FW we have Pappasitos, Pappadeaux and Pappas Burger, all right next door to each other. Parking lots perpetually packed. http://www.pappasitos.com/http://www.pappadeaux.com/The entire empire: http://www.pappadeaux.com/pappasfamily.htm

6. I'm not really a salsa snob... but here's a tip |
|
If you have a little fresh cilantro on hand, chop up a couple tablespoons and stir it in with whatever salsa you've got. Makes any sals a little better.
Also, I'm addicted to Tostitos Hint of Lime chips. Yummmmmmm!
