Video of sea turtle mourning death of friend.
An outpouring of love from one turtle to another tore at the heartstrings of beachgoers at Laniakea Beach on Oahu's north shore.

News of the slaughtering of a turtle named "Honey Girl" brought tourists and visitors to the beach to watch the survivors. "Look at how much joy people get out of this and then something like this somebody does something horrible like that it's terrible," one visitor said.

But what happened Monday afternoon tugs at your heart even more. A large male, known as "Kuhina" appeared on the shore and quietly made his way to a memorial volunteers set up for "Honey Girl."

"They had to move the ropes aside so he could come straight up through and just came up and put his head right near the memorial right near the picture and just stayed."

10. Yes.
The news site doesn't say how the other turtle died. Whoever did that is heartless. Futhermore, I'm sick of these scientist types telling us how we shouldn't think animals feel like we do. Animals do have emotions and can feel happy and sad. When our little bird was found and we brought him home he perched in his cage and said "Happy Tippy".

5. Wow... it does make you wonder
I mean, how else could this behavior be explained.

What happened to Honey Girl? The story and video both refer to her being 'slaughtered.'

9. Why would anyone do that? So pointless. So cruel.

6. Heartbreaking, that poor turtle.
I saw the video yesterday and bawled my eyes out. It's so sad to see him mourning.

11. Is he truly mourning, or is it coincidence? Are some animals capable of emotion?
Who knows, but it is quite moving. :(

12. Oh, they are definitely capable of emotion.
Elephants clearly mourn their dead. Dogs and cats get depressed after an owner or companion animal dies. There are thousands and thousands of examples of animals displaying emotion. Even my little bunny gives happy little all-four-feet off the floor hops when I bring him upstairs to run around the living room.

15. No doubt in my mind after seeing that video
What else do you think that turtle is doing? He is staring at a photo of his deceased companion.
I was absolutely stunned by this video. I had no idea that such an animal was capable of seeing a photo, understanding it, and relating it to itself in some way.
We fail to give sufficient credit to the creatures with whom we share this planet.

16. I certainly think he's grieving, in some sort of respect.

18. Of course.
One of my kitties didn't eat or drink for days after his buddy was put down. All he did was sleep in the closet.

13. that someone intentionally slaughtered one of those turtles..
I'm sorry, I know the lounge is not where we're supposed to talk about big stuff but I am freaked out more every day by what we do to animals. Hardly anyone cares about the mass-extinction, they still think the miracle of baby-making is more important than any of the terrible things our species is doing to it's world.
I'm just sick, I am sick forever, I cry every day at news like this and then everyone I talk with expects me to have a baby? I am so sick, how can I go on watching this stuff for another 40 years?

Some animals definitely do grieve. Elephants are another example.
