I am going to have to return my cat Caesar....

I am going to have to return my cat Caesar to the rescue from whence he came :cry:

I cannot get him to stop peeing on my rugs.

He has been barricaded in the upstairs of my house for over a month. He uses the litter box exclusively up there, but the second I let him downstairs, he urinates on my Tabriz carpet.

I have spent a fortune on sprays, trips to the vet, etc.

There is nothing wrong with him physically.

I think he doesn't like the dogs and would be happier in a home without them.

3. I have tried everything. I think he is truly unhappy.
For the first few months he was here, he just hung out in the basement, but then started using my bomb shelter/wine cellar as a litter box :puke:

Locked him out of the basement and then he took to the carpets.....

It must be lonely for him locked upstairs. I left yesterday morning and did not go upstairs to bed until 10pm. That was more than 12 hours alone - poor kitty.

Caesar  This is sad, I hope he gets into a new family soon. Maybe he needs a rug-less little apartment to live in.

will find him a home soon.

I just hate to do it.

27. I know you hate to do that but wow, the odor is real
difficult to deal with, not to mention it is probably unhealthy.

Is this rescue place a no kill shelter? I ask because it may be difficult for them to place Caesar once they find out he urinates on carpet.

Don't beat yourself up because you DID try to work with the cat.

31. the rescue is definitely a no kill shelter. I have the phone
number of the foster mom so I am going to call her directly and try to place him back with her.

I don't think I could do that with my fibro. It would kill me to sit in the car that long

7. my male cat has done that most of his life
he is almost 20 yo now, and gets locked on patio at night and in the bathroom during the day while it's hot in the summer, otherwise lives in my sister's backyard. it's been hard so i understand. my cat is too old for rescue, etc.

14. yes, it's not fair if cat isn't happy
but my old cat can't find a home anywhere else, and confining him is all that i can do. i can't even sleep with him anymore, but still has a lot of life left in him.

It is really horrible. The house smells. I have to get the rug steam-cleaned AGAIN now.

19. LOL
I have a cat that does that, he's fine if the litter is pristine, but if it has been "used" by either him or his brother once or twice he "protests" on the floor in front of the box. Little jerk. On the plus side he has me trained to keep the litterbox in pristine condition so props to him.

I know your heart is breaking, but I think this is the best thing to do...

17. And the thing is there is another dog coming in 2 weeks.
I am going to try to get Mr MB to do it this weekend so that I can tell Little MB in person when I visit her this weekend at camp.

I know she will be sad too

Thanks Peggy

16. It's his way of getting moved to a place he likes better. You're
probably right that he doesn't want to share with the dogs.

Back when I had a 3 cat limit, we took in a stray and gave him away 3 different times. Each time he would do something terrible like attack the other cats at the new house or actually spit up blood!. After that, we had a 4 cat limit! He was very happy here, but refused to go elsewhere!

18. they told us he would be fine with dogs, and Luna
never really cared one bit about him, but Egypt likes to torment him and I can't get her to stop....and if she isn't tormenting him, he is launching attacks at her.

He really needs to be in a dog-less home.....

Thanks friend :pals:

It means a great deal to me to have you post about it too since you have my heart kitty.

20. We have a dog who comes whenever we call "Kitty, kitty, kitty"!
The social dynamics among animals are just as complicated (probably more so) than what goes on in the Lounge!

22. Are you willing to try one more thing before you do this?
We had a cat that peed on the bed regularly. . . then we tried Cat Attract cat litter.

Put a second litter box downstairs with this litter in it, and it may very well do the trick:

http://www.preciouscat.com/attract-litter-p-5.html

There is also an additive they make that can be added to any NON SCENTED litter.

This has herbs that will definitely draw the kitty in. It worked like a charm for our Archie.

If you haven't tried it yet, please do!!!!!

I'm going to PM you the info too to make sure you get it.

24. Aw ww, I know you've really tried with Caesar
so don't be sad for him, he will end up in a home where he is happier. Cats can be so stubborn!

Caesar is trying to tell you he needs to be somewhere he can be the center of attention and rule the roost. He should live with a nice old lady that will totally dote on him.

28. That's so sad. We had a dog that I couldn't get to stop peeing on my dining room rug.
We had to make her an outside dog.

My cats prefer to go outside, but will use the litter box if there's no one around to let them out.

Any chance Caesar could become an outside cat?

She wasn't a good fit for her family, but she is perfect for us.

35. Have you tried
placing a litter box on the rug where he urinates?

It is something I did with a cat who had this problem. I put the box right where she was pissing and then began moving the box - one foot at a time away from that area - she just kept using the litter box and quit using the rug.

Also, Persian rugs carry a distinct animal scent which some animals find irresistible to mark. Could you take that rug up and use a less expensive cotton fiber or synthetic?

Also, I doubt that the cat is peeing on your rug because he hates the dogs. He is peeing on the rug because he prefers it.

Here is a helpful site:

36. I think he is unhappy here because of the dogs.
Upstairs he is alone, no dogs until I go to bed. Then they spar for a little while, but everyone assumes their positions.

When he had free run of the house, he was constantly engaged with them and I can't break them of this habit...I tried water bottles, everything.

I haven't done the litter box on the rug itself. It's the living room, not really a place where I wanted the litter box.

I could take the rug up, but in all honesty and you can flame me if you want, I should not have to rearrange my furniture because of this. I have never dealt with a cat that did this while being completely healthy

It is just very sad.
