Little MB's summer camp nurse just called.
The kid was bitten on the chest by a horse :wow:

How does this happen? The nurse said they are "cleaning and dressing" it twice a day. I am a tad freaked out right now....

1. Well, it's good that she's OK
for now.

But, how in the heck do you git bit in the chest by a horse?

8. I wonder because she is semi-experienced around
horses, and it's not like it's the first day of camp. She has been riding every day for three weeks now.

5. You need to keep reapplying horse repellent in hot weather...
...or the damned things will just keep biting.

6. Bit on the chest by a horse?
That is quite odd. Was it a deep bite?

10. She said it took skin and there is a mark
She said the skin looks like the skin under a blister when it pops  and there is a toothmark.

7. It happens. I'm glad she's okay. Poor baby.
They need to give her something for pain as well. Aleve would be perfect. She's going to have quite a bruise there. I was bit by a horse once. Not fun at all.

12. Horses
I was supposed to go riding at camp and a kid got thrown off right in front of me and I heard his leg snap like a twig. I went back in the candy store. Never have ridden but have been bitten a coupla times. Don't like horses eyes, they look shifty-

but right now I am kicking myself for allowing her to participate when I am not there to observe.

14. That is odd.
I spent alot of time around horses as a child and was never really bitten (although one horse kept nibbling at my boots as I rode him)--kicked yes, but not bitten...Probably was a bad tempered horse.

17. I can understand that.
On the "bright" side though..being bitten in the chest..is much preferrable to being kicked in the chest!:o

19. I called the nurse back and asked her to call me
this evening with the little one comes in to get the bandages changed.

They didn't even tell me when it happened - just that it did...

I don't know if it was this morning, yesterday, etc.

22. Ah, the ol' summer camp game of "Lie down and let the horse grab a beer off your chest"
Oh, the many summers we used to play that one, and the bandages we'd go through... sure brings back memories, that does.

Anyway, I hope little MB heals up quickly and doesn't end up with a lasting fear of horses.

23. Sounds like the horse may have inadvertently been trained that
breast pockets are where treats live. One of my in-laws has a horse that used to do this -- they'd bring sugar cubes in their shirt pockets, and the horse would nip at the pocket. People think it's cute when it's a colt and it nibbles at your shirt, but then the horse gets big and doesn't realize that its nibble isn't so nibbley any more.

Horse bites don't feel very good, for sure (okay, they HURT), but as long as they're keeping neosporin or something along those lines on it and covering it up so her shirt doesn't rub on it, she should be fine, albeit a little bruised for a bit.

Hope she heals up quick.

28. summer camp horses have miserable existences.
Sorry your kid got bitten, but that horse has probably had an entire lifetime of absolutely novices bouncing on his back, yanking on his mouth, and having nasty children messing with him in any myriad of ways (throwing rocks, banging on his door, sneaking up to scare him, you get the point).

There are very few horses that have Christ-like patience to take camp life and still have a good nature. I'm not surprised he's a biter; it's a common social disorder horses in situations like that develop. Biting horses are often saying "leave me the fuck alone".

I'm not blaming your kid, s/he could have just been walking by.

29. I can completely see your point.
Thanks.

Apparently the riding instructors aren't very well-versed in handling either because my kid was walking by a horse that was having stirrups adjusted without the handler having a grip on the far rein. The horse made a move on the handler and my kid just happened to be in the way.

Thankfully she is fine and in good spirits.

30. Learning by doing!
Horses have many ways of instructing us how to behave around them. I had one as a kid who taught me in short order NEVER to stand between her and the barbed wire fence. ALWAYS watch out for the laid back ears... OUCH!!! I'm sure Little MB is none the worse for the wear and will have quite a story to tell.

31. good thing she is only 9
I had one nip my chest before, if you know what I mean. ouch I agree with poster above - probably a spoiled animal looking for "treats" in a shirt pocket.
I've seen a studhorse reach over a 6 foot fence and lift a full grown man off his feet.
As a kid I was bit on the upper arm by a burro that grabbed and wouldn't let go.

Equine bites are nothing to sneeze at. But having said that I'm sure your daughter is fine, or the camp would have hauled her to the hospital. Relax, it was just a nip. Good lesson to not play with animals mouths and always pay attention - especially with the big kind.
