3. They'll stand up like that if they want to see something they can't see on all fours.
Usually they don't stand on two legs for very long because their center of gravity is too high (unlike big-assed humans) and their balance on two legs isn't that great. But they will stand up for short periods of time if they think they need to. It's pretty cute.

(a Maine Coon, I discovered.) She likes to sit on her haunches with her paws on my shoulders rather than sitting on my lap. she prefers this. don't know why.

9. Mine do it. Not generally in a pile of stuffed animals, but they do it when they
want to see something higher than they are. We live in the country, so I have hunter cats. I can watch them from the kitchen window while they hunt at the edge of the woods. One cat, Galahad, in particular will stand up like that occasionally to see into the woods. I think it is because we have a wooden rail fence and he is trying to look over the rail. Under is to low to really see what is going on.

used to do the same thing when it was about feeding time. He looked up at you when you had the bowl of food in your hand and rose up in an attempt to get at it. it was so cute!

18. I have a cat who did that as a kitten. She didn't know cats weren't supposed to do
that. She did it when she wanted a better look at something across the room. Grew out of it though.

20. I've had several cats who could stand like that. Some were more adept
than others and could hold the position for quite some time.

23. My male kitty did it frequently when he was younger (less than 1 year)
He now does it only occasionally.

Some cats do it all the time. Most cats don't do it at all.

24. I had a Burmese/Siamese mix, Pipin, who would sit up..
just like that and eye an eight foot wire fence and the house and yard beyond that. Then he would crouch down on three legs (one front paw tucked under himself) and jump the fence. Also when he was observing wild life and didn't want to be seen he would do that. He was 15 pounds of muscle and would harass the dogs, cats and birds on "his" block. I think this posture is rare. And the neighbors that saw him do this sitting up called him the "rabbit" cat. Peregrine Took lived to be 15... and was a red tabby.
