How the hell do you handle debilitating job burnout? |
|
I have absolutely no motivation to work, especially the last couple weeks since they've fucked up the whole computer platform. How the hell do I snap out of it before I get fired?

1. Do something interesting on the weekend, or... |
|
...volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen.

6. are you talking about it .. |
|
...in therapy? Maybe try some anti-depressants? (I know, a lot of people don't like using pills as a solution - but there are worse things, like suffering every day.)

7. You're in the wrong forum... |
|
...go to the Mental Health Support Group, there are people there who are very good at providing the support you need.

4. I had to finally switch gears and try something else for a while |
|
I've done the same damn thing for 14 years, and spent the past eight without any vacation-usually working six or seven days a week. I finally had to take the past two months off without pay just to regroup and refresh some old skills. I'll live off home equity until I can find something else to do for a while. I tried every self help book out there but couldn't find any way to get myself back on track with my usual career. I feel for you; the total absence of motivation can make a person feel hopeless and incompetent. I doubt that people in civilized countries that offer adequate vacation time suffer the same kind of burn out we do.

9. I go through bouts of burnout as well and.... |
|
I try to remember that my job has allowed me to own a nice home and wear decent clothes and eat. It has also paid for my education and still is. Also, I have income left over to travel. When I think about these things and how bad the economy is, I feel pretty damn grateful and I do the best I can to get through the burn-out. Burn-out usually only lasts for a few months for me. Hang in there and maybe get some anti-anxiety meds. :)

11. I would suggest some time off |
|
if you can't take time off, you need to find some serious way to unwind on the weekends.

set small work related goals that can be achieved in an hour or so. Then as you start making some accomplishments you will start to feel better and can start making bigger goals.

Do something that reminds you that there is a whole world outside of work and politics and DU.

14. I fucking hate my new job and I've only been doing it for a week. |
|
the only thing I can think of is some sort of pharmacological adjustment for my brain. I've tried all the "Zen" things and I still fucking hate spending my time helping some hyper capitalist douchebag line his pockets by outsourcing so he can rent Swiss chalets and go eco touring in Brazil. And then he makes me FUCKING BOOK HIS VACATION. AND SELL HIS BMW. I fucking hate this man and every ounce of his hypocritical, self-indulgent being. Sorry asshole, you can't fly across the world several times a month and call yourself environmentally concerned because you decided to buy a Prius and make sure your maid recycles.
Sigh, I can't WAIT until these three months are up and I can quit. I can't work legally in this country without going through a lot of bureaucratic hassle so I'm working for this douche. I'm not even sure what he's doing is legal. All I know is I'm going to be doing some research. Might as well put my multiple degrees to work SOMEHOW.
DID I MENTION I FUCKING HATE MY BOSS

15. When you find out, tell me. I just got back from three weeks away visiting family, |
|
friends, and a trip to Alaska. Forcing myself to come to work today was one of the hardest things I've done in a long time. It took everything I had not to call in and just quit. And as you can tell I'm not exactly working. :(
