eeek! for some reason my webcam will flash and take pics like this sometimes, and i can't figure out to turn it off. anyone know? it's a built in isight cam.

I didn't think iSight cameras have a flash.

One reason for the overexposure could be that the camera is metering off the dark wall behind you, rather than your face which is lit by the screen. That would seem to be the case here, since the background seems correctly exposed.

It looks like you're positioned a bit below the camera in this shot. It might therefore be metering over the top of your head.

27. the computer screen flashes white when it takes a picture sometimes

That's just the "Photo Booth-effect." I just had a look on my Mac and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off. Like the "swish-click" shutter sound, it appears to be non-optional.

34. If you're interested in having more control over your iSight camera...

...I recommend a little app called iGlasses. It lets you play with exposure and effects in ways Photo Booth won't, so you can ensure your pics come out right every time. It also works with any webcam-enabled program (like Skype and even Firefox), so you can look glamorous on video, too.

The app isn't free, however, but I've found it to be well worth the $10 the developer asks. The link to the iGlasses website is:

One of its nice features is that it doesn't replace the underlying webcam application, it merely enhances it. You still use Photo Booth/Skype/whatever, except now you have a small 'iGlasses" panel that you can use to tweak the camera. Very simple and intuitive.
