1. What are your pet liberal issues (glbt, women's rights, guns, death penalty, environment etc)
I'm pretty outspoken about GLBT equality, women's rights (mainly abortion) and the environment. Being that I work in substance abuse prevention, I'm active in advocacy for the rights of recovering people.

2. What's the worst injury you have ever had?
Broken arm. I know, not very exciting, but there you go.

3. How long is your ignore list?
I don't have one.

4. When did you join DU? Was it better then or is it better now?
I joined in 2001... not long after the site was established. It was way different back then. Barely looked like the DU of today... but it is actually better now. There weren't that many of us back in the day.

5. If you went to college, where did you go?
Auburn University
Auburn, Alabama

Issues: The Environment (including Energy Policy), Science vs. Myth, Labor, Poverty and the Rational use of our Military are my main issues, and I am certainly on the Bandwagon for glbt and women's issues. I diverge significantly from the stereotypical Liberal stance on Guns and the Death Penalty.

Injury: Physical - a severe ankle sprain I got while reacting to stepping on a nail and having it go through my foot through the top of my shoe then falling down and having a nail go about two inches in my right arm. I was striking a set and was really hung over.

.........Emotional - The Redskins losing to The Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII. Or my Folks' Divorce......

Ignore List: Two

Joined DU in Feb 2004. Technically, DU is a superbly executed site that improves consistently - really well well done. Content-wise, there are posters I miss, but I can't see that the content is any better or worse.

I went to Knox College in Galesburg, IL for my BA in Theatre, Central Michigan University for my MS in Computer Science and Pace University for my Doctorate in Computing.

3. Two people, I think

4. I joined back in 2002. It's better now because of all the added features. But I hate the primary madness.

5. Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Va and Northern VA Community College.

17. Might as well...

1. What are your pet liberal issues (glbt, women's rights, guns, death penalty, environment etc)

Public nudity, and the shameful lack thereof (especially by Salma Hayek). Right behind that, I'd probably have to say environmental issues and education (or the lack thereof, in this country). And I think the lack of universal health coverage in the USA is a national shame, and urgent need, and essentially a matter of national security. Of course, the common root of all these evils are the neocons and their ilk that preceded them in various guises.

2. What's the worst injury you have ever had?

I've had lots of painful ones, most rather transient, by virtue of having spent a lot of time outdoors doing things that all too often hurt way too much. Probably the most serious discrete injuries so far have been when I almost cut my right big toe off as a kid (and was trying to pull out from the wound what turned out to be my bone) and when I had my worst motorcycle crash, at age 20, and broke my leg and completely dislocated the foot (it could do 360s). No spinal injuries or anything, thank goodness. Motorcycle helmets saved my life perhaps as many as four times, and for sure twice -- it's moronic not to wear one (if you're riding a bike, I mean...wearing it to a Tupperware party, for example, would probably be a bit of overkill).

3. How long is your ignore list?

Getting longer all the time. I didn't have one until recently. Now it's got 16 people on it. So far I've only included people who annoy me beyond all reason or whose yapping dilutes the content of this place far beyond any civilized extent, not people who are mean and nasty or who were actually out to get me (the worst offender there is tombstoned now, anyway), and not probable Freepers (I come here so infrequently that they're usually already axed by the time I come back, and they're easy enough to ignore the old-fashioned way).

4. When did you join DU? Was it better then or is it better now?

I'm not sure when I actually joined. I know it was at least 2003 but I feel like it was earlier...I read DU for a long time before I signed up, perhaps explaining my uncertainty.

It was better then. I know a lot of people here will claim the usual counter, that it's always been what it is and that there was always good and bad, but it was better then. Somewhere in 2005 (I was absent most of that year) it changed, very fundamentally, and a new cohort was very obviously dominating the Lounge. On top of that, a nasty PM-driven set of personal attacks, that resulted in a war that was more often than not fought so covertly (albeit often in plain sight, just with great subtlety) that most people here were at least as oblivious as I was, changed the tone here markedly. It was pretty much a loss of innocence for DU, I think, even if most of us had little or no idea what had happened -- I see it as the single defining event that changed DU for the worst. It resulted in some bannings, but its other effects are still felt and skirmishing still happens here along those old battle lines. And, of course, the people on my ignore list pretty much know how I feel about the unprecedented 'dumbing down' of DU in the last year or so.

I think DU's last glimmers of a 'golden age' were somewhere in late 2004. Yes, it's common enough to look back on the 'good old days' no matter how good they actually were, but I do not believe that this is an artefact derived of nostalgia for me. I don't think DU will ever be any better than it was then (or even is now), and not solely as a consequence of larger numbers of participants.

5. If you went to college, where did you go?

I went to two, in two different countries. Don't want to name them right now because I've already had enough fun with a deranged stalker from this forum.

1.) Strangely...I don't have many. I'm a super-string political theorist. Everything is connected-in-importance.

2.) Lawn Reindeer. I'm hoping I don't have to explain again, that story is gruesome. In brief, fell on a reindeer, nearly bled to death, almost lost my arm and gutted myself severely. I was 5.

3.) Exactly 1 person currently. It's usually 0. This single person however made an argument so offensive that I had to hide an entire thread because I was going to tell them off in nuclear proportions using language that might break space-time and cause the formation of a black hole of hate...by which I mean I'd have gotten banned.

4.) Years ago. Lurked before that from time-to-time back almost to the founding. Didn't join sooner because GD peeps really skeeved me out. Have left and returned on several occasions. Different...a lot of the people whom peeps around here really miss...really pissed me off during their time here. It is less fun than it used to be though.

5.) I went to the Catholic University of America where I earned a B.A. in Political Theory. I'm weighing my "going-back-to-school" options now. MBA? Photography school? J-school? Creative Writing program? Ph.D? Masters in Non-profit Management or Development? (The last few would require me to go back and take additional undergrad coursework to boost my GPA.)

19. 1. Well I think that pets should be free to... wait, that's not what you're asking, is it? :P
I have a fairly wide range of pet issues, most of them involving freedom, rights, and seperation of church and state.

2. Had my heart broken a few times. Oh, and I broke my nose when I was 14, and and suffered lots of minor injuries when I was doing warehouse work. Pulled muscles mostly, but bad enough to put me out of commission for a few days or a week or so. Nothing as bad as what happened to my friend John who worked there though... let's just say his big injury involved a 125 pound steel I-beam... and his genitalia. It was swollen for a week. But not in a good way.

3. Still at 0. Has been the whole time I've been here. I have a bad habit of finding redeeming qualities in just about anyone. Even annoying assholes like <censored> and <censored>. I usually can't stand those guys, but every now and then they'll say something funny... :P

4. Hmm. I don't know. When I first joined DU the political areas weren't as nasty, I don't think. And they weren't as messy. Now I tend to only hang out in the Lounge and GLBT and I'll check the music group now and then.

5. Went to University of Central Florida on and off for 5 years, was a music major for most of that time, now I'm going to Monroe Community College in upstate NY... to try and finish my 2 year degree. :P There's a reason UCF earned the nickname U Can't Finish.

22. Answers!
1. What are your pet liberal issues (glbt, women's rights, guns, death penalty, environment etc)
The Fourth Amendment -- sad that it's a one-sided issue, really.

2. What's the worst injury you have ever had?
I don't get injuries -- I cause them! :o
Seriously, though, I've never really had anything too serious -- no broken bones or anything. I've bruised a few ribs. That was pretty painful. And I've had all manner of cuts, bruises, black eyes and so on, but nothing noteworthy.

3. How long is your ignore list?
I have no one on ignore -- not even lionesspriyanka. :P

4. When did you join DU? Was it better then or is it better now?
In the lead up to the 2004 elections. I'd say it's no better or worse now. Just different.

5. If you went to college, where did you go?
I went to the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, the oldest (and *cough cough* best) journalism school in the world.

1. What are your pet liberal issues (glbt, women's rights, guns, death penalty, environment etc) Environment (specifically Great Lakes protection), gun control, balance of trade.

2. What's the worst injury you have ever had? Well, I've had a brain tumor but I don't know if that qualifies as an injury. I've broken my left arm six times, maybe that's it. Or maybe the second degree burns I got last fall when I tripped and fell on a hot grill.

3. How long is your ignore list? I don't have an ignore list. I don't get noticed enough to have any enemies.

4. When did you join DU? Was it better then or is it better now? I joined in 2003 (I think). I don't think it was as nasty then as it can get now sometimes.

31. my answers
1. pet issues - at the moment it's probably women's rights and election reform.

2. worst injury - badly sprained ankles, I guess.
Worst illness, though, was a stomach bug that, without getting too graphic, was awful, and ended up putting me in the hospital for severe dehydration. It took them 15 minutes to find a vein to get the IV in. That was not fun.

3. ignore list - about 5, I think.

4. I joined in Sept. 2003 and in a lot of ways I think it was better then. There was still a lot of shock over the 2000 election and we had not yet suffered through and lost the 2004 election, which introduced a lot of infighting and distrust of the party. I don't remember that being so prevalent earlier on. This last primary season was depressing, with many people getting banned, and I miss some of them a lot. I do think that there have been some very positive additions, however, particularly the Activists Forum.

5. college - I got my B.A. at Temple University (studied film and media arts) and after a bit of a break I'm starting to apply to grad schools now.

to cover our costs. Please take a moment to donate! Thank you!

34. Friday answers
1. What are your pet liberal issues (glbt, women's rights, guns, death penalty, environment etc)
Health care (especially in terms of women's health), environmental, education

2. What's the worst injury you have ever had?
Probably recovery from c-sections. It's hard being split in half and taking care of a helpless human at the same time.

3. How long is your ignore list?
I have a few people on PM ignore because I think they're nuts and I don't want anything to do with them on a personal level. I don't have anyone on ignore otherwise.

4. When did you join DU? Was it better then or is it better now?
I joined under the name "populistmom" Fall 2002 and changed my name in early 2004 to SarahBelle. I think the overall tone was more progressive and the site as a whole was more relaxed and felt like a community. I'm not on as much now. Part of that is how I feel about the site, but mostly with my work and life now, I don't have time for it.

5. If you went to college, where did you go?
I went to two separate community colleges (I've had to pay my way through college with a family without the option of ensuing large debt in the process) plus some additional coursework at a nearby university.

35. Well, gee golly!
1. Getting gum and all other tacky things out of our country, and ending the worship of sports and people who can throw balls real good like, huh huh, yep gee golly, he throws real good, he's a god.

2. A pretty bad one after a collision with an 18-wheeler that I was quite lucky not only to live through, but to actually have no lasting physical problems other than a small limp.

3. 0

4. Early in 2002 - DU has certainly changed, but neither for the worse or the better. It had its charms then, but it has its charms now, too. But it was kind of cool when only a few thousand of us were here.

5. I went to a small private engineering college.
