My dryer is dead
it heats, but the drum doesn't turn. If life weren't so impossible right now, I'd tear it apart. It's probably just a belt. However, life is impossible right now and I can't afford the parts. And if it's not the belt, another dryer is out of the question.

I know this isn't an end of the world thing, but damn. Damn.

1. And the hits keep on coming...
Lizzie, I'm so sorry for your string of bad luck. Tests of character are one thing, but you're getting tortured.

I have a friend who was in a position like you about ten years ago. She was on the east coast, just having moved from Iowa, and her life fell apart in pretty much every way imaginable. I was able to visit maybe once a year, and I'd help her out with the things I could -- the physical, household, chorelike things that she wasn't able to do herself for whatever reason. The rest of it just took her time and her will to push through.

She made it, despite thinking that nothing would ever resolve. But it did -- not as fast as she'd have liked, but she worked and cried through it and came out stronger and happier than before.

Roll with the punches.

No one deserves good things to happen for them more than you.

5. I know this isn't much of a consolation
But I can walk you through replacing your belt, if you need the assistance. It's kind of a pain in the ass.

I'm sorry you're having a bad day. Think of fluffy bunnies and unicorns.

7. I hope it's the belt
but it smells like it's about to start burning. The interior of the drum is completely worn and rusted. I have an interview this afternoon. I'll go down and start poking around this evening.

I'll PM you if I decide to take a screwdriver to it instead of a sledgehammer. ;)

Thanks. :)

9. Often, the belt can get loose and sit in one place
Before it snaps. The friction caused by the motor will burn it (causing a burning smell). If the drum still spins when you push it, it's probably just the belt. And a belt at a repair outlet is under 20 bucks. Getting it on is the bitch because there's a tension wheel that you have to pry the belt onto. If you need help, I'm here. Prepare to have the make and model number ready :).

11. Thank you...
it's natural gas. I'm more comfortable being able to just unplug it to work on it. In order to move it out from the wall, I'll have to disconnect the gas.

10. And it's not just the dryer
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x8031155

I'm unemployed and my daughter's financial aid file is stuck in review hell at Ohio State... School starts in 4 weeks...

Oh, and the radiator cracked on the car - $380 in repairs.

13. Can you contact your landlord about repairs?
Or do you own the dryer? :(

14. They left it because the place they moved to had appliances
otherwise, I'd have to have my own. So, no. :(

I've got 2 drying racks and lots of doorways to hang clothes on hangars.
