How can anyone trust LIEberman? How can repukes trust him, especially the super fundies? He ain't a christian and he ran with Gore. Isn't that a little fishy from the repuke point of view?

that would be an awful choice for McCain. The super fundies don't think mormons are christians.

He's weak with the fundies and needs to shore up his right flank. Plus Huck can make populist noises and appeal to centrist middle class types.

12. Honestly, I don't think he has a good pick. |
|
He needs Huck for the fundies, Romney for the money and the Mormon votes (he's also surprisingly weak in the mountain west, and low Mormon turnout could cost him several states) and a likable young centrist for everybody else. He needs a pro-choicer for the moderates and women and a pro-life nutjob for the fundies.
He has no options that don't involve pissing off at least one large 'pub constituency.

14. In the mountain west, yes. |
|
They tend to vote as a bloc, so in states with mormon majorities (Utah, Idaho) or significant minorities (Nevada, Arizona, parts of California... most of the west to some degree) they're a significant factor.

16. Well, they're not going to vote Obama. But if he snubs Romney, they might stay home in droves. |
|
Especially if he snubs Romney for Huck (who is a Baptist Preacher by trade) there being some historical ill-will between the two religions.
The Mormons got real used to the idea of Mittens in the White House, and have some prophecies related to the need for a Mormon in the White House at some future national emergency which a lot have interpreted to mean the War on Terra.

18. Yes, there is some prophecy about a mormon in the |
|
white house. I think Orrin Hatch mentioned it on a radio show when he was running for president. The trouble with that prophecy is some fundies interpret the same prophecy to be some kind of world take over/ anti-christ business on the part of mormons.

23. Yeah, Huck is a much better public speaker than McCain. |
|
I guess that comes from religious training.
I heard that his wife writes a lot of his one-liners. He's reasonably good at soundbytes, and you are right that he would be an appeal to the conservative base -- "Don't worry about Johnny-boy, when he keels over from the stress we'll finally make this God's Country in truth!"
But I'm hopeful that such a move would be seen as obvious pandering.

28. You are absolutely right. |

Huckster is an extremely good speaker. He's the anti-McCain when it comes to speaking. At ease in front of a crowd, eloquent, sincere-appearing, good sense of humor. At least Biden would probably chew him up and spit him out in a VP debate. :)

20. He'll cave in to the evangelicals and pick Huckabee |
|
I've got to believe that Obama's choice of Biden has effectively killed McCain's ability to run with Romney. He'd get a big chunk of evangelical votes by selecting Huckabee, but the thing to remember here is that there are a significant number of evangelical conservatives who are NOT pro-Huckabee...one of my best friends falls in this category. He thinks Huckabee is a fake and dangerous.
But as the cliche goes, "desperate times call for desperate measures," and that means McCain will do whatever he thinks he needs to do in order to "nullify" a veep as strong as Biden.
That's one reason why Politico is floating the "Colin Powell is on the short list" crap.
