I just found out today that one of my students 12 years old tried to hang herself Friday and IF she lives, she will never be a whole person again.
She was deprived of oxygen for at least 20 minutes probably more. They do NOT expect her to live at all.
I tried to be strong for the rest of my students but after about the 100th kid crying and hugging, I told my principal that I had to leave and left 1 hour early.
I can NOT imagine that life is so horrible for a 12 year old that she could take such drastic measures.

5. Some kids are accidentally doing this while playing the choking game :( |
|
I am so worried that my own kids will try something like that or start huffing. But I have stressed for years that these things are dangerous and kill brain cells if not all of you. They are pretty proud of their smarts so here's hoping that will deter them.

But do you know if those number correlate with a rise in psychotropic drugs prescribed to those age groups?

That poor girl. I really think that that stage of life is the absolute hardest, and she must have been in terrific pain to try and kill herself like that. Hugs to you and all your students

She's so very young to be that sad to think that life isn't worth living. I think for some kids it can be so spur of the moment they just don't realize what they're doing is permanent. Especially for kids and young adults, one suicide or attempt can somehow make it seem ok for others.
It'll be 3 yrs in Sept. since my granddaughter(she was 6) found a teenager hanging on her other grandparent's property. The school he came from had several suicide attempts and at least two more who did die. I tell you this because your school should keep an eye out for students who may be vulnerable.
You are strong greenbriar. I wouldn't have lasted as long as you did.

19. Thank you. That is what the Grief Counselors are worried about |
|
is repeat or copy cat incidents
I especially feel bad as two weeks ago...the first week of school, I had them do an assignment about themselves and in this assignment, she said she was depressed and had an aweful life...I didn't really do anything about it and maybe if I had, things might have been different. I just chalked it up to "teen behavior" and not getting along with parents

if only they had done something, had noticed, had called more, etc., etc, etc. If you had any idea that this poor girl was going to attempt suicide, you would have done anything to stop her...you didn't know. Be kind to yourself

27. You had no way of knowing |
|
So many kids go through rough times. It's understandable that you'd chalk it up to teen behavior.
When I was her age I could have written what she did. I remember feeling depressed and alone at that age due to a pretty awful childhood. From about 10-14 my father who had always been abusive, became worse. I became the object of his degrading and abuse, but suicide never entered my mind. I just counted the years until I would graduate and could be out on my own. I so wish your student had done that too. :(
Be kind to yourself greenbriar. My prayers are with you, the girl, and everyone at your school.

That's a horrible thing to bear with anyone but with someone so very young....
Please don't beat yourself up, greenbriar (I read your post about the paper she wrote). Kids are impulsive and dramatic and it's often very hard to tell when someone is truly depressed or at risk - especially just from a paper.
