Because of another thread/Warning signs of Suicide
Warning signs of suicide include:

Observable signs of serious depression:
Unrelenting low mood
Pessimism
Hopelessness
Desperation
Anxiety, psychic pain and inner tension
Withdrawal
Sleep problems
Increased alcohol and/or other drug use
Recent impulsiveness and taking unnecessary
risks
Threating suicide or expressing a strong wish to die
Making a plan:
giving away prized possessions
sudden or impulsive purchase of a firearm
obtaining other means of killing oneself such as poisons or medications
Unexpected rage or anger

The emotional crises that usually precede suicide are often recognizable and treatable. Although most depressed people are not suicidal, most suicidal people are depressed.Serious depression can be manifested in obvious sadness, but often it is rather expressed asa loss of pleasure or withdrawal from activities that had been enjoyable.

1. This is always good information, but with a suicide rate of
less than 1 in 100,000 for 10-14 year old females, it just doesn't happen enough for people to even think to look for the signs. Honestly I don't think there was anything that person could have done to change the outcome. Sure it might look that way in 20/20 hindsight, but that's like saying I could have been a millionare if I had just picked those exact lottery numbers (before the drawing). Sure it was possible to pick those numbers, but just very unlikely because you didn't know what they were.

2. I totally agree that
there was no way for the poster to know what the outcome would be.she was not close enough to the situation to have any idea how profound the depression was. Even if you are extremely close sometimes you are unaware. I had no idea my son was depressed, much less depressed enough to end his life. However this being said...suicide is the fifth leading cause of death in kids from 5-14.

6. no doubt, it's nearly impossible to catch this rare but
tragic event. I know most of us like to think that we can control and influence in things, but sadly that is often not the case.

I appluad your efforts to turn a negative to a positive.

8. Watch out for calm demeanor
Once a person decides they are going to take their life there is often a period of calm right before they kill themselves. The decision as you can imagine is a difficult one. When they finally decide to act there is often a sense of relief and calm that is often missed by family and friends. Non professional mental health folks-

10. That's what happened with my friend in high school who killed himself
He had tried to do it previously by crashing a stolen car. He did seem to be doing so much better-we all thought it was because he was in therapy.

It wasn't, it was because he had made his decision and was just awaiting his opportunity. It didn't take long, because his parents didn't lock the handgun up, even though they knew their kid was suicidal-I don't blame the gun, just the irresponsible parents. Other methods are not so final.
