Anyway, went for dinner with my roomate's classmates, all ESL people. I've always had a thing for Japanese girls cause they're so darned cute and pleasant, with a nice hint of attitude. The whole time I'm thinking... "DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH ANY OF THEM."

And of course by the end of the meal there I was making plans with them tomorrow night. So, now here's what will happen, I'll totally fall for one of them and then she'll leave and I'll be bummed AGAIN. After the last one I made a rule about not dating people about to leave. But, good luck sticking to that when a cute woman with thick framed glasses named Acki asks if you'll be coming to the bar tomorrow.

not saying that's that's what you have, but being on the other side of it, as an asian woman, it's kinda creepy. Like somehow my asianness trumps my humanness. When i meet guys like that I steer clear, as do pretty much all of my asian friends (even my one gay friend who keeps getting mistaken for a little asian boy when he's actually mexican).

There's no real fetish there. I grew up around asian cultures to the point when I went to Korea I didn't even feel a culture shock. That said, people who actually DO come from Asia do act a little different. It's not so much the look for me as it is the attitude.

I tend to date outside of my culture because the repression inside the culture wears on me, but I tend to date the guys that look at me as human first. And treat me as such.

and I think the difference is whether or not they want to know you for the individual that you are.

I'm an Indian-American man and have experienced both. I have been a white woman's ethnic fetish and I got the feeling she was with me just so she could tell her friends and show how "progressive" she is. She would always reference her friends by their ethnicity or religion (my Muslim friend, my black friend, etc) when talking about them. She never really saw past my ethnicity and I was a novelty for her. And I've also dated women who were attracted to Indian men, and that was a much more positive experience. These women were interested in me as an individual too.

People are attracted to each other for various reasons, many of which are cultural or physical, and those qualities can be ethnic. So I don't think there's anything wrong with being attracted to Asian women as long as what you said about asianness vs. humanness.

Full disclosure: I'm attracted to white women and always have been. That's what I grew up with in rural America. I'm still attracted to women of all races and would never NOT date someone because of her race. But I can't help who I'm attracted to and what I'm familiar with.
