1. Not quite so happy here.
My team's QB is out for the season with various knee boo-boos. x(

At least I have my grad school team to root for.

2. What teams?
My grad school team (currently) is the said Sooners. Undergrad is Rutgers, who were a disaster when I went there, but are pretty good nowadays.

4. Undergrad is Oregon.
I had one of my students try to suck up to me the other day by wearing a Ducks Football t-shirt to class.

Grad is West Virginia. If we can get our receivers in order, we may actually have a shot. Coach Stu was talking about putting Pat White in at WR and having one of the backups play QB because so many of the young guys have stone hands. I sure hope he was joking.

13. That game was an effin' abomination.
I am SO HAPPY I didn't spend the money on last minute plane tix to go. I'd probably have jumped off the upper deck. Instead, I drank myself into a stupor with a bunch of my friends.

14. That's a good thing, though.
Works if you win, works if you lose.

Either way, you get some kinda happy.

I went through the same thing with the '94 Rose Bowl vs. Penn State, back when the Rose Bowl was the Rose Bowl. To this day, I hold a grudge against Penn State.

3. BOOMER!
Tomorrow shouldn't be too much stress--I just wish I could get the game up here, but it's only on PPV in Texas and Oklahoma unless you've got dish :(

Oh well, I'll follow along and look forward to watching next week!

19. Just word-of-mouth from some of the players' grad student teachers
Obviously as a female social science grad student I wasn't at any of the practices, but it was discussed pretty openly at WVU well before he left. He's a screamer, to say the least.

He had a rep here for calling out the AA students for being, well, lazy n-words, when they didn't perform.

If it's the case, though, at Michigan, you don't have to worry much. The boosters will have him thrown out faster than they know what hit him if that's the case. I don't think Rodriguez realizes that Really Big, Established Football Powers like Michigan don't let their head coaches have the same kind of power that smaller schools like WVU let their coaches have. We have a serious old boys' network problem here.

Well, that issue, and if he doesn't beat Ohio State. ;)

My SO's a huge Michigan fan and is very conflicted about the whole thing, being in Morgantown and working with some former WVU players who weren't too fond of the guy.

Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 08:41 PM by jasonc
If he performs, and is a racist ass, they may let him stay, however, if he does not perform and is a racist ass, he will be out on his ass.

I am a Michigan Alum, I can not root for anyone else...:P

23. Fair enough. I bleed emerald green and gold
for the Oregon Ducks, regardless of how good or how crappy. I've been on the Fire Mike Bellotti bandwagon for years, but I still root for 'em.

I'm going to grad school at WVU, and I enjoy the football, but it ain't the same when it's not at Autzen. 20,000 more seats at Mountaineer Field, and not half as loud. It must be deafening in a house as big as y'all's.

Frankly, as far as the Rodriguez thing goes, I'm not terribly upset that he left; it's his prerogative as a college coach. Not handled well by either side, though (him or WVU; Michigan had nothing to do with it). I'm not nuts about him as a person, but there are a lot of non-likable, assholy college coaches out there -- he ain't special. Says a lot more about college football than it does about Coach Rod.

At this point I'm more curious how the spread option's going to work for you guys, having watched and enjoyed a lot of Michigan football with my SO. It's not exactly the traditional style for the school, and it seems out of keeping with the rather smash-mouthy style I'm used to seeing from them.

And frankly, regardless of who your coach is, nothing makes me happier in the Big 10 than seeing Michigan (or anyone else, for that matter) beat Ohio State.

25. Oh, hell, he ain't a backstabber.
College coaches bounce all over the place. He had a pretty bad rep at WVU for mistreating his players, especially the minority ones, though. Hopefully he'll shape it around at Michigan and, well, beat y'all. (I have to say that; I'm engaged to a Michigan fan and he will leave me otherwise.) ;)

30. Centuries ago AFAIK.
Then again, I'm a diehard Oregon Ducks fan and root for WVU because I'm here. I don't pay that much attention to the drama, although I've never been a Rodriguez fan in the four years I've been at WVU (doctoral student). FWIW, I'm not a Mike Bellotti fan, either. I'd like a football coach, not Barney the Dinosaur, please.

When it comes down to the wire, I'll root for Oregon above anyone else, and whatever school I end up teaching at second, as long as it's not Washington or Oregon State.

(The latter particularly infuriates my dad, who played football for Oregon State for a couple of years in the '60's. We have a running $1 bet on the Oregon-Oregon State game every year. I'm quite a bit ahead.)
