Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

We all came out to montreux
On the lake geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didnt have much time
Frank zappa and the mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

We ended up at the grand hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the rolling truck stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know well never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

1. That famous guitar riff is based on Beethoven's 5th
I was in Spain last year & on the BBC channel, there was this news program & the topic that week was an interview with the guitarist who came up with it. Pretty interesting.

3. I'm watching the Seven Ages of Rock as we err... speak.
They had the riff, the had no time,so they literally just winged it and poof - a rock legend.

5. I wish I could remember the name of the program
because that's not what the guitarist said in it. He said he started playing Beethoven's 5th on the guitar, then started riffing on it, eventually coming up with what we hear in Smoke on the Water.

Interesting that there is another version of the story.

6. Your story can also be true,Ian Gillan the singer was talking about
Blackmoor had come up with this great riff, not when or how or where.

9. Maybe he had already created it
& just added it to that particular song? I wish I could remember more of that program now.

11. Exactly how music is made. One guy has a riff and brings it to the boys.
They jam around and improvise and presto a great song!
