Gustav is one BIG mofo of a storm.
We're going to get rain today from the outer bands, I believe. You northern gulf state DUers and family members stay safe.

1. Can I talk you into moving to civilization yet?
Worrying about you every hurricane season is going to give me a fucking ulcer.

7. I'd still rather live with hurricanes
than all the other nasty things the rest of the country puts up with. At least you have a few days to get out of the way. Not so with earthquakes, tornadoes, flash-floods, mudslides and whatever else there is that happens faster than you can blink without much (if any) warning

9. We only get flooding here.
And it's slow, there's tons of warning, and it's generally a non-issue unless you buy a house in a low-lying location.

11. That's the general rule of thumb in Houston, too, for housing.
And yet, out in the west part of town there are whole neighborhoods built inside of the Addicks Reservoir! I still haven't figured out how the developers not only got away with getting permission to do that, but are able to sell the very idea to people buying their product.

"Yes, your home is not only in a flood plain, but if we get enough flooding, it will supply drinking water for Houston as a reservoir."

15. We've got a whole neighborhood (North Natomas) that's in a massive flood plain
where it's pretty much inevitable that most of these houses will be underwater to the rooftops sometime in the next decade or two.

Developers run this town. Hell, our last Dem nominee for Gov was a developer of floodplain crackerboxes, if that tells you anything about who runs CA politics.

12. There are places where nothing happens
No flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. We do get snow so I suppose that's kind of a yearly natural disaster.

Stay safe.

we've had steadily deteriorating weather all day. We're under a tropcial storm warning and they are expecting the winds to pick up this afternoon.

Pouring rain with thunder here and very dark.

It's a nasty creature, you guys further in the path stay safe!

We just got pounded a little while ago. High winds and torrential rain.

More on the way. It must be awful in Cuba.

20. If the current track holds...
NOLA may be spared the worst of it... Unfortunately, Baton Rouge, where I live will take a good hit. At least we don't have to worry about storm surge.
