A psychologist I saw violated confidentiality after I specifically told her not to. |
|
I told her that several times, actually. And she agreed not to.
And, now I find out, apparently she did.
And yes, I know there are situations where they have to (abuse, being suicidal, etc.), but this was NOT one of them
I'm pissed off. But I don't think I'll officially complain because she was otherwise nice to me. And she's only a resident. And I'd have the guilts for life if I ruined her career.

1. Ruin her career before she does it to someone else. |

When I was your age, I saw a psychiatrist for a while too. He specifically told me that unless I was being abused/was a danger to myself/was a danger to someone else, that he could not violate my confidentiality.
Parents have the right to know what their kids are doing, but they DON'T automatically have the right to know everything their kids are thinking. This doc was flat-out wrong, and needs to be smacked down before she violates someone else's privacy. Imagine if she decided to "out" a gay teen to fundie Christian parents.
Seriously--raise hell.

3. I don't think I could. |

I think she made a mistake, since my mom specifically asked her something. She should have said "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to discuss that with you.", but she answered a question my mom had when she really shouldn't have.
Also, she was extremely nice to me.
Jeeesus. I'm such a pushover. I don't think I could do it.

beyond despicable.
Report the psychologist to the board (or whatever governing body) you have in Canada.

(nevermind, youre in Canada)
Seriously, breaching confidentiality is no joke. She has a professional obligation to maintain confidences. She is a resident means she is still learning HOW to be a Psychiatrist. NOW is the time to help her in her education and talk to her and possibly her attending about her behavior. It is NOT ok for her to do this.

You have other support systems. Her next may NOT. Imagine the damage she could do.

Would you want anyone else to feel the betrayal that you're feeling now?
