Any Texas gulf coast people here.
Going to be lots of fun this weekend.

Even for people further inland, Ike is carrying lots wind and rain.

Take care everybody.

Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 12:56 AM by Skittles
even in high school I would sleep when I got home from school, then stay up very late to do homework. Tell your girl to try to get into a field with flexible hours - it will save her a lot of grief. :)

7. Looks like Ike will hit the center of the coast line.
Plenty of wind and rain for everyone.

It never gets easy waiting to see who will get hit.

Going to be busy the next few days.

I don't which is worse, the wind or the flooding.

I hope this is the last storm.

11. Thank you.
Watching the news of Ike hitting Cuba, damn.

I hope people along the coast line are getting out.

Houston is further inland but we do have some areas that flood.

16. Huh! Pasadena floods with a light rain!
:P

I remember Allison and all the flooding we got then. Luckily, my apartment is in a 500-year floodplain, so I don't have to worry about that. The street does flood briefly in a really heavy downpour, but the kind of rains we'll get from Ike aren't likely to be quite that heavy, so I'm not worried that way. It's the winds I'm only ever worried about. I think it will be better this time as the SW side of the 2-storey apartment I'm in doesn't have much in the way of windows (it's the other side that is worse with it's stupid "bay" window and no way of covering it or a landlord that cares enough to help us out that way...) I think most of the winds will be coming from the SW, so I think we're "safe", relatively:

At the same time, the "backyard" is a Houston Looting & Plunder r.o.w.

Way back in 1983, I watched as Alicia roared through and how the sky was lighting up in these big blue flashes. I figured that was all the local powerlines (I lived in the Clear Lake area at the time with family, about 30 miles from Galveston, instead of the 50-60 where I am now) were slapping together in the winds and arcing. So, I'll try and be aware of that happening here ;)
Maybe I can get some cool photos to post!

18. That's the truth.
I used to live down there. I always thought it was pretty amazing that an area that gets SO much rain even under normal conditions didn't have a better drainage system.

23. Ah yes, apartment complexes in Pasadena.
I grew up there.
You might be off Shaver, off Richey, or Spencer, or Preston, or who knows where.

During Alicia, I was conveniently in Fresno, CA watching the fence at Mary's bar on Westheimer and Waugh being blown away, which was about five blocks from my apartment, at the time, which was on Graustark towards St. Thomas University.

I know the area.

For those who don't know Mary's is a very famous gay bar, at one time they had great drag shows.

39. Actually, I'm neither in Pasadena nor is that an apartment there
;)
I just know from experience of either working in Pasadena or going to school there just how bad their drainage system is.

Rather, I'm south of the Meyerland area, about two miles away from Braes Bayou, so relatively safe from the flooding it may bring for those residents right along it (and the Texas Medical Center, as happened with Allison.)

Although the 'average' track being shown by the NHC has Ike turning north when it is just offshore of Corpus, I'm still not that worried about it. I'll do all the normal preparations, but at least I don't have the winds pummeling a large window on the east side of the building here. Or at least not until it's been on land for a while...

12. I know. I am nearly panicking because I don't know what to do.
I am fairly useless in a crisis. Now apparently I can't even be responsible for myself. Mostly it's because I can't decide whether to stay or go. I am in a zone that only evacuates for a Cat 4 or 5, if that helps at all. Not sure it does. I don't have enough food or water to last several days without electricity or water. I think we'll know more tomorrow or the next day about where it might be heading. If it's north of here (and a Cat 2 or less at landfall) I will probably stay here.

14. First off, stay calm.
How strong is the place where you live and does it flood.

Go to the store and get supplies, you know what to get.

I can't say whether to stay or go, that depends on a lot of factors.

Just stay calm.

19. I know.
Do you live near the coast or inland.

My first hurricane was Carla back in 1961, we were in the middle of it in a farm house.

We made it OK.

I can remember the wind blowing agains the house for 3 days.

I was 7 years old, to young to be afraid.

It will be OK.

Can you go to a friends house or have a friend come to your house.

It looks like Ike will hit somewhere in the middle of the gulf coast.

Get some supplies, if you go you can take the stuff with you.

The Red Cross will have some shelters open, you could go there.

Is this your first hurricane.

22. I am in Corpus.
Right now it looks like it might be north of here, say Port Lavaca. They are not calling for evacuations here yet.

I left during Rita, unnecessarily as it turned out.

I will make a decision later today or tomorrow.

We took our work trucks and boats to Beeville, out of harm's way.

31. Aransas County has a mandatory evacuation for Thursday.
The Corpus TV stations are showing a track the goes into the Nort shore of Matagorda Bay. Ike will go all the way to Dallas and beyond before the storm ends. Most of the evac destinations are going to have bad weather.

Rita will cause a lot of people to stay.

I don't know if I would want to be out on the road with the weather that is coming.

Tough choice.

20. This storm will hit people not just on the coast.
My guest from NO are still here, they can't go home because they still don't have power.

I was going to sent them to my Aunt's house near Austin but I think they will be better here in Houston.

Got your supplies yet, today would be a good day to get them.

Good luck.

27. I went to the store for supplies and they were out of peanut butter.
That was going to be my staple, PB&J sandwiches. But I bought some SPAM instead (and pork and beans) and some propane for my camping stove. Since it looks to be making landfall near Port Lavaca, I think I will stay put. I was going to Austin, but it looks like they will be hammered with nasty weather later, as it passes through. Maybe tornadoes and stuff there.

We need it, but still....
Coworker in Victoria is leaving tonight. He works for a state agency and they're closed until next week.
My family lives in Houston and their street floods like crazy! Cars have been flooded more than once. I hope they have found higher ground to park on this time. No talk of evacuation though.

I will be putting up the plywood tomorrow, won't take long.

Just in case we get really hit, I just want to be prepared.

Ike is turning a little more north now, could change.

Everyone get ready for the worse and hope for the best.

All the gulf coast will get something out of Ike.

My first hurricane was Carla, I was just 7 years old but I remember the wind and rain.

We were in a farm house in the direct path of Carla, to young to be afraid.

Now we have a several little kids here, we will keep them busy.
