Do we really want people only to live among their own kind? |
|
This is kinda about the hipster thing, but the view has been expressed that young, college educated white people should live in places where no minority or working class people live, lest they drive up rents.
Would the converse be the same for black people? Should they only stay amongst "their kind" and not move to leafy suburbs with good schools that don't have a tradition of being integrated? Or maybe, just maybe, should people be allowed to live where they want?
The subject of gentrification is a weird one. White people who live in the suburbs are accused of being afraid of the city and not caring about minorities. White people who move into majority minority areas are called gentrifiers who drive up rents.
In the last few decades the inner cities have become much nicer places to live for a host of reasons. I don't think red lining areas does anyone any good.

3. I think the whole concept of one's "own kind" is strange |
|
I'm not really sure what that would be for me. I'm white, but I don't make a lot of money. I go to college but I'm working class. I'm intelligent but street smart and scrappy.
What is a person's "own kind." What a bizarre concept. Personally, I think my own kind is the human race and I prefer living in diverse neighborhoods.

I live in a fourplex. I'm surrounded by my own kind. Houstonians, every last one of 'em. Everyone on my block is a Houstonian too.

I prefer to associate with carbon-based life forms. It makes entertaining so much easier when you don't have to provide for the fluorine breathers. And cooking silicon-based snacks is murder on my kitchen knives...
YMMV, of course.
