I can't emphasize this enough. If you really want to feel good about yourself
go volunteer in your nearest school's SPed classroom. I guarantee you the teacher will be thrilled because there is no long line of volunteers itching to get in there.

I volunteer once a week in the MOMD class at the elementary school and the children are so sweet, so loving, I actually leave with a huge smile on my face.

A friend and I also host parties once a month at the middle school, to celebrate the holidays. The kids love, love, love it.

Seriously. If you have some time, do it. I guarantee you won't regret it.

1. That's awesome, Midlo :)
You're so right about there not being a long line (in fact, often, any line...) of people who are ready and willing to volunteer. Good for you for doing such positive stuff! :D

3. I'm not being that altruistic, believe me.

Having these little faces light up when you enter the room would lift even the darkest of spirits. It's so amazing to have these little guys rush up and hug you. It's humbling.

:hi:

4. Agreed
I do the same thing, when I can - which isn't often these days, due to working night shift. I think growing up with an autistic brother, and helping out (read: partially-forced socialization) with the groups he was with instilled it in me.

Whatever the reason, I enjoy it, for all the reasons you mention - an added benefit being that there is one child at one of the local schools who can proof-read my work for spelling errors within seconds ;)

5. I used to go to some local schools for kids with special needs as part of work
and it was always a pleasure to see the joy and happiness on the faces of the kids.

You make a really good point. If I weren't so wrapped up with my own son's school volunteer stuff, I would.
