McCain is not running away
he, as the front man, is daring the Democrats to not agree to the bailout bill. This is political one-upmanship. If the Dems do not agree to the bill, the repugs get to use it as a campaign issue. If the Dems do agree, the repugs get what they want, 700 Billion dollars free to use however they wish without any oversight.

This is reactionary panic, pure and simple. Their move to postpone the VP debates as well, proves it in my book.

it came from the Bush Whitehouse. This is bigger than McFails Campaign.

to DC last week and this week and Palin spent 3 days prancing around Manhattan.

this is about the bailout bill, getting the campaign issue is secondary.

20. well then
how do you not see that this is all about the bailout bill? If it really was an act of desperation the repugs would have had McFail and Failin IN DC TODAY, hell YESTERDAY...to show they were Serious. We would be seeing pics of Failin talking to "W" about the "economic crisis" while John McFail would be in the senate giving speeches.

this is about the bailout bill and it is a dare to the Dems in the house. not a bad move either actually for them.

27. Yep. I agree with Schumer... they should give them just a small portion of it and wait until January
to see if more is required. I can't believe they would ever get $700 billion passed for this. They don't need it all at once. They won't spend it all at once. Why would they give it all at once?

33. that is a way more reasonable and sane solution, i heard it was 150 billion now but
there has to be real estate put up for it, like 5 billion worth from the companies that get the bailout and then if more $$$ is needed (you know it will!) they have to come back and ask.

hit a reset, i don't even know if those are factored in so this could be just the first wave. I saw a panel on Bloomberg the other night, all money folks from different sectors and 2 out of 3 them said they think we won't hit the bottom for another 4 years.

34. Unity breaks out against Bush bailout
After months of disingenuous talk about bipartisanship and rising above politics, Democrats and Republicans, in Congress and on the presidential trail, seemed suddenly united - in their distrust of the White House's $700bn bailout plan, and their confusion as to how to play the issue to their advantage.

I just hope Dems can set the rules of it. Strict Oversight. Penalties for the CEOs. Breaks for Middle America. No Golden Parachutes.

I'd prefer they let the whole system collapse, and voters correct the behavior.

42. Sure won't. It's not just the Democrats against this.
Sheer panic and desperation:

....senior McCain campaign strategist Steve Schmidt launched what was, even by contemporary Republican standards, an extraordinary attack on the media, picking in particular on the New York Times. The paper reported that Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, had been paid more than $30,000 per month in an earlier job working for a group seeking to limit government regulation of US mortgage lenders.

"There is no level of public vetting with regard to Senator Obama's record, his background, his past statements. There is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads. This is an organisation that is completely, totally, 150% in the tank for the Democrat candidate," Schmidt said in a media conference call. When Ben Smith, a reporter for the newspaper and website Politico, asked Schmidt to back up several of the factually dubious claims he'd made in the call, he refused. Instead, he told Smith: "You're in the tank."

"My understanding is that Rick Davis recused himself from the dealings of the firm."

and again:

"Again, my understanding is that he recused himself from the dealings with Freddie and Fannie, any lobbying efforts on his part there. "
