I am on empty
I live in Atlanta, where apparently we are almost out of gas. Our imperial fuck up of a governor has exasperated the situation to the point where now more than half the gas stations in the metro area, as of 1 pm this afternoon are out of gasoline. Those gas stations that are just barely hanging onto their supply have raised the price of gasoline to $4.56 a gallon, almost a dollar more per gallon over the national average of $3.56 a gallon for regular gasoline, and they will likely be out of gas by tonight. Gov. Sonny Perdue failed to act and stop gas gouging, so now the situation has gotten completely out of hand. Gov. Perdue should have started rationing the gasoline supply weeks ago, but instead he continues to stick by his words that their is an ample amount of gasoline in the city. Even though there clearly isn't. Anyway I had to make a decision this morning. Come to work and risk not having enough gas to make it home, or stay home and possibly risk losing my job. It really wasn't much of a decision. I have a son to take care of and have to keep my job. So now I am at work, with my gas tank indicator on the "E". I have no idea if I will have enough gas to make it home. I must make it 19.3 miles from my job to my home, and my gas indicator is already sitting on "E". I hope I make it home. Many of the gas stations are saying that they do not expect to get any more gas until sometime tomorrow morning. Unfortunately that does me little good right now.

I just hope I can make it home and find gas somewhere in the morning.

1. Why is there such a shortage?
There has been no such shortage here in Texas, despite Hurricane Ike. Yes, lack of electricity in Houston has made it harder to get there but not in most of the rest of the state.

I wish I could send you some. Maybe just buy a couple of gallons on the way home, if you can find it.

4. Well It's a long story
A pipeline that supplies I believe like six southern states, including Georgia, busted. So that caused a temporary shortage of gasoline supply to the pumps. Then like the idiots that live in Atlanta, and much of the state, they all panicked and started filling up their tanks, and storing fuel in canisters. It's like when snow flurries start to fall, all the super markets will be out of bread and water within an hour. The supply couldn't handle all these morons in the city filling up their tanks every forty-five minutes and the gas stations ran out of gas. Our brilliant governor decided not to step in and stop these people from overtaxing the pumps and creating a greater shortage. Now he is traveling to Europe this weekend just as the situation is expected to get worse. What a fucking coward our piece of shit governor is.

2. Yes your gov is an ass.
Please consider the bus system. Even a 2 hr bus ride is better than a stranded car. Figure, bus home tonight, bus to work tomorrow and then get gas that is expected on the way home. Sorry, but I know stranded and don’t wish it on anyone. http://www.itsmarta.com/ Really, even if your car makes it home, you are still out of gas tomorrow.

7. Buses really aren't going to help me
My county transit sucks and the buses don't come anywhere near where I live. So even though I could take a bus from near where I work, it would drop me off far from my home. Not really practical. I guess this is what I get for living in the burbs, but I can't afford to live in town.

22. Same here. There is no public transportation in Woodstock.
The closest bus terminal is in Kennesaw, which I would still have to drive to and it's about 6 miles from me.

3. Does your county have a vanpool?
I play tag with three or four vanloads on my commute in from the west side with my wife.

If your own county doesn't have one, maybe you can get info at your workplace? I take it there isn't an opportunity to carpool with co-workers? Are you poking around GRTA's site?

6. Unfortunately no.
My co-workers don't live anywhere near where I live. They mostly live inside the city. I live out in the burbs. There is one woman who works part-time as a consultant with the company, but she leaves three hours earlier than I do. So I would force her to have to wait three hours after she gets off to just take me home, and vice versa when I give her a ride, I would have to show up at work three hours earlier. The county transit we have in Gwinnett county is just absolutely horrible. The buses don't run anywhere near my home and thus makes it hard for me to commute by bus.

11. Winston-Salem and Greensboro, NC
are also lean. I believe our distributor is Colonial. I've heard a couple of reports that the pipeline prob may be rectified by weekend. In the meantime, it's blustery here, what with our newest "almost" tropical system coming onshore.

Let's hope the end of the world doesn't happen all at one time!

17. you can't get anywhere in Winston Salem or Greensboro
without a car. Even if you live in one of those downtowns, to get groceries, you still must drive down the street.

I would have to say that in terms of public transportation, the entire South (excluding D.C.) blows for the majority of people.

21. Can't get anywhere with no car except for work, places to shop, bars restaurants, parks
All those are within an easy bike ride of my modest house.

I avoid Hanes Mall Blvd but who needs stuff from there anyway?

14. You are not alone. I live in Woodstock, just northwest of Atlanta.
I have a little over a 1/2 tank of gas and all the stations in my area are bone dry. I work in Marietta across from Dobbins on Cobb Parkway. I have enough gas to get home tonight, go to the grocery on Saturday and come to work on Monday. If I can't find gas, I will be taking some vacation time.

25. Ummm.....Sonny's god doesn't seem to like him much.
When Sonny prayed for rain during the 2006-07 statewide drought, all he got was a heavenly umbrella. The rest of Georgia has had some respectable rainfall since but metro Atlanta (w/Lake Lanier) has only received teaser amounts and a tornado.

I'm guessing he's being punished for slashing the Peachcare for Kids (healthcare) to bits.

23. Update
Well I was able to make it from my office to my house. Every gas station I passed on the way home last night was out of gas. It was very scary, cause at that time I didn't know if I was going to make it, and if I had ran out I would have been really in bad shape. But I was able to make it home. I got up early this morning and drove up to a gas station that is less than a mile from my house. They had gotten gas in at around 5:00AM and it was around 6:30 when I got there. I was able to go right to the pumps and fill up. Later in the day around 3:00PM on my way to work the same gas station already had a line of cars stretching out into the roadway. It's my guess they will be out of gas by tonight.

Thanks for everyone that prayed. I appreciate it.
