Has anyone ever eaten Spaghetti squash? |
|
I have been fascinated it it ever since I heard about it. I would love to have my Grandmother make up a batch with her famous spaghetti sauce. It just sounds like a clean, healthy, filling meal.

1. It doesn't taste like spaghetti |
|
It just sort of looks like spaghetti in that it's very stringy. I like to peel it and saute with butter. It's got a nice mild flavor, not as starchy as a winter squash but sort of a combination summer-winter squash

3. What is winter squash? Is that squash that is grown in the winter... |
|
down south? I never heard of it. Sounds yummy though. My kitchen is inoperable at the moment so I can't cook any of this stuff for myself.

4. It's what we call a hard-skinned squash |
|
like an acorn squash -- to differentiate it from the thin skinned summer squashes. I guess we call them winter squash because they will keep through the winter? I'm not really sure. They are very tasty, more starchy and sweeter than a summer squash.

2. Yep, very healthy and very filling. |
|
It's good with spaghetti sauce or olive oil and spices or however you usually like to prepare either pasta or vegetables.

6. Yes, I love it with red sauce. |
|
The acorn squash is good for pies. At least that's how I'll eat it. But the spaghetti squash is good substituted for pasta at times.

Try making mixing some turkey hamburger, an egg, some club crackers, and I put bell pepper but you can use whatever else you want as far as veggies and mix it up together like a meatloaf type thing. Then cut your squash into two halves and dig out the center of both halves ( just enough to put your mean in the center, not the whole center) then wrap it in foil and bake it for about an hour, it is the best filling meal for two ever. Its so good. I put tomato paste too but thats really your call depending on what you like.

8. Once. That was enough. |
|
And I had it with spaghetti sauce. Being Italian and a pasta addict, having spaghetti sauce on some strand-like thing that didn't taste like spaghetti wasn't my idea of a good time. Maybe it was the name. Maybe I just copped an attitude. Stranger things have happened.
I have a friend who is gluten-intolerant and can't eat pasta, and she recently raved about cooking spaghetti squash with tomato sauce. Being neither gluten intolerant myself nor a spaghetti squash fan, I showed a polite level of enthusiasm but felt no envy.

I mix pesto with butter, cream cheese and a little milk for a fabulous sauce to top it.

18. They are very easy to grow |
|
And they keep for a long time if you store them in a cool place. I ate my last from last summers crop in May.

16. Curried, with a few sunflower seeds, and twice-baked with |
|
butter. Pretty good.
I made one for a work function once. Split one in half, prepared one half like "regular" winter squash, with butter and brown sugar, and the other half with curry. The curried version went first.

very subtle flavor, but I like the little bit of crunch you get with it (unless you seriously over-cook it)- great with maranara sauce
My daughter loves it with just butter, salt and pepper

|
and a little brown sugar tossed into it. Delicious either way.
