I admit I'm no Ansel Adams, but how come on my newish digital camera everything turns out looking like it was taken at a bar???

1. Check your white balance settings.
Probably set at the default for direct sunlight.

2. Double check settings, and if no luck take it back for an exchange.
What kind of camera did you get?

4. you're hanging out in bars?

Seriously, lots of cameras have an "exposure compensation" option so that you can make exposures lighter or darker than the "automatic" middle-of-the-road-guesstimate.

Say you were shooting a snowy scene, you would set the exposure compensation to brighter, or if you were shooting a performer on stage, you might set it darker so the background would go black and the performer was properly exposed.

Check the manual for "exposure compensation" or just look on the camera for a +/- sign, and that might let you adjust it correctly.

10. A little better...

I'd wager the exposure's set either on automatic or no flash — more likely the latter, since most light sensors will read underexposure without flash in most indoor situations.

Pretty soon you won't be able to book time at a tanning salon at ANY price.
